I was blown away.? Because I was working on my company?s strategic plan, this could not have come at a better time.? Who would have guessed that the mention of a great video would have gotten me an opportunity to see the The Bubble Plan hands-on?
So on the day appointed, I showed up for my meeting with Judy Muller and Veronica Brown, Principles at TrueFruit Management Consulting, not quite knowing what to expect.? My mother would probably attest to the fact that I tend to be a fairly complicated kind of guy, so I REALLY knew that I was not going to have a good idea of where to start.? I knew that I?d been mulling around a number of ideas and a couple of new ventures, but thought I probably would brain-dump (their word) on them. When I arrived at their office, they were ready to go.? They had a whiteboard set up, a slew of markers and lots of energy to make things happen.? After a bit of conversation, we got the session started.? They got me talking by asking very strategic questions, making observations to keep my brain clicking along and began furiously writing on their whiteboard.? Basically, their goal was to do a complete brain dump ? essentially getting all of the ideas and thoughts I had in my head onto the whiteboard.? Then, items are grouped and prioritized in ways that make the most sense for moving from the idea space to the innovation space.
It was very interesting, observing the balance between the two women ? Veronica is very tactical ? she kept the energy up, kept the project moving forward and keeping me fully engaged in what was going on.? Judy, on the other hand, seemed to more strategic.? She would observe and watch, creating mental linkages and asking questions about anything that she saw that didn?t quite fit the picture.
The process was very logical ? they began by creating a framework ? basically learning from me what was most important and how I would know when I saw certain boundaries beginning to get broached.? Once the foundation was laid, the question that was begged to be asked was, ?now that you know this, what do you intend to do with it???
Taking that framework and laying it over my current projects and aspirations, it became very obvious that I could accomplish things a bit faster by looking at them differently, and approaching them in a very logical, strategic way.? Interestingly, even some beliefs that I had about certain motivators turned out to be ?misplaced? in the way that I was thinking about them.
At the end of the session ? which was about two hours, I felt very good about the work that was done, from a mental relief perspective and from a ?good use of time? perspective ? it was a very good meeting.? No time was wasted. Judy & Veronica were kind enough to take the information that was gathered, review it amongst themselves and put it into a couple of documents for me to immediately put to use.
Getting facilitation right is a key component to successful brainstorming sessions.? Brainstorming sessions, of course, have all sorts of application, from strategic planning sessions with an individual, a group or a company to product development, creative development, project planning, etc.? I can see this team being invaluable to our company, to support our clients who could benefit from strategic planning and I look forward to having another opportunity to work with them.
