The 21st Ludum Dare com?pe?ti?tion came to a close recently, and you can down?load and play most if not all the games at the site. For those who aren?t aware of Ludum Dare, it?s a reg?u?lar devel?oper com?pe?ti?tion where indi?vid?ual game mak?ers are given a theme and 48 hours to cre?ate a game. The code and art need to be orig?i?nal and devel?oped dur?ing the com?pe?ti?tion, and no pre-made con?tent can be used. This leads to some bizarre, inter?est?ing, and often buggy?games.
Flee Buster: The 1st place over?all winner.
After the 48 hours, par?tic?i?pants are given a week to try the games out, and then votes are placed in a vari?ety of cat?e?gories to deter?mine a win?ner. Win?ners don?t get a prize, but do receive some recog?ni?tion for their work and all par?tic?i?pants retain the rights to their game (which you would think should be a given, but well, the times are what they are I suppose).
The num?ber of entries have been grow?ing with each com?pe?ti?tion for a while now, but this one had an astound?ing 599 sub?mis?sions! That?s 311 more than the last one in April. Why one more per?son couldn?t take part, giv?ing us a nice, even and sat?is?fy?ing 600 is per?haps my only disappointment.
The theme of Ludum Dare 21 was ?escape,? and the over?all win?ner was ChevyRay with their game Flee Buster, a sim?ple (duh, what do you expect?) but fun and fast-paced game with three modes of play. Your goal is to make your way through the dif?fer?ent play modes and envi?ron?ments col?lect?ing tokens and avoid?ing the bad?dies, hav?ing to quickly adjust your approach with each shift in game?style.
