Samsung Homesync - hands-on with the Android-powered TV box

As a global electronics giant, Samsung has presence in every room in the home, most notably the living room -- the company recently claimed to be selling three TVs every second. And as we all know, Samsung currently dominates the Android smartphone landscape. So it was only a matter of time before the Samsung TV and Android worlds collided.

At Mobile World Congress this week we got our first look at Samsung's Homesync, a 1-terabyte TV box with a Google Play-certified Android front-end. Homesync delivers a full Android experience, with a TouchWiz-based UI that actually scales up really well to the big screen. The main view is a grid of running windows, and you've also got a standard app drawer view, along with on-screen keys you can hit using your pointer.

I'm Ryan North, Creator of Dinosaur Comics, and This Is How I Work

I'm Ryan North, Creator of Dinosaur Comics, and This Is How I WorkRyan North says he has "basically the best job ever," and we can't help but agree. As the creator of Dinosaur Comics, Ryan has been churning out the beloved webcomic nearly every weekday since 2003. He's also the guy behind the Adventure Time comic series and To Be or Not To Be, a choose-your-own-path version of Hamlet that recently became Kickstarter's most funded publishing project ever. When he's not comic-ing, Ryan uses his professional programming skills to build stuff like Project Wonderful, an online ad service, and Oh No Robot, a searchable text database for comics. We stole a few minutes of Ryan's busy schedule to chat about apps, gadgets, Patrick Stewart, and more. Did we miss something? Ryan is chatting live for the next hour?ask him yourself!

Current gig: Writer and programmer! Writing projects include Dinosaur Comics, the Adventure Time comics, and To Be or Not To Be. I'm also a computer programmer, and Project Wonderful is the advertising network I wrote after wishing there was one out there that didn't suck.
Location: Sunny, unseasonably warm Toronto, Canada
Current mobile device: I've got a Samsung Galaxy S III which is the first phone I don't hate. My previous phone was a Motorola abomination and before that an iPhone 3G. I don't really upgrade phones that often, but the past two died and I took the opportunity to upgrade.
Current computer: I have a Lenovo Thinkpad, mainly because they're one of the few laptops that support three monitors via a dock. My other machine is one that I built myself, parts being swapped out and upgraded over the years. It used to have a floppy drive in it that went way back to when I was six, but it never got use and eventually the motherboards didn't have connectors for it anyway.
One word that best describes how you work: Distractedly

Above: A Dinosaur Comic.

What's apps/software/tools can't you live without?

There's a few things that have changed how I work. Dropbox is great both for painless, automatic backup but also for keeping data in sync on different machines. I do most of my writing (both words and code) in Textpad?it's a pretty great text editor that supports regular expressions. I'd include my phone as one of the tools?I use it to jot down ideas wherever I have them. I used to email them to myself, but Evernote solved that problem nicely too.

I've been using Winamp for music for years and years, mainly because it supports global hotkeys, so I can pause, skip, rewind, etc. by pressing, say, CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+PAGEDOWN in whatever program I'm in. That sounds dumb but it's great?it means I can control the music without losing focus on what I'm doing. Sometimes I'll skip songs without even noticing it: it's like second nature. I'm all about efficiency. I have the task bar at the top of the screen on my Windows machine, because I mapped it out and if my hand is on the mouse, odds are it'll be closer to the top of the screen than the bottom, so by having the task bar at the top too I save valuable milliseconds.

Basically put me alone in a room with a computer and internet access and I can be happy for days. Weeks? I guess I'd need food and water at some point.

What's your workspace like?

I work mainly from home in my office, where I've got a desk (I'd love to get a standing desk just so I can move around more) and a fancy office chair that I spent a lot of money on. After my bed, it's the piece of furniture I spend the most time in, so I figured it was worth it. Sometimes I'll go into the Project Wonderful offices?there's a similar desk there, but there's other people too, if I'm craving social interaction. I am the #1 fan of multiple monitors: two is odd because it means you're always turning your head to the side the monitor is on, and three is a really nice sweet spot. Center screen for work, left screen for research/status stuff, and right screen for email and Twitter. If I'm really focused, I'll minimize the email.

I usually work to music, but if something's not working, I'll turn the music off. I've tried coffee shops once or twice but it's not exactly productive times for me. I work best alone, with distractions that I can manage and control.

What do you listen to while you work?

Music! Tons and tons of music. Here's the thing: anything with words or actual content will be distracting, so NPR/CBC/Savage Love podcasts are out if I'm trying to be productive. And music that is super awesome is out too, because it'll be distracting how good it is. I generally listen to "just okay" music when I have to focus, and save the awesome stuff where I don't have to be as productive. I really love mashups because I really love listening to more than one song at the same time I guess!

What's your best time-saving trick?

Multitasking. I have a dog which means at least one to two hours a day is spent outside walking, or standing around at the dog park. I used to think "Oh no, wasted time!" but now I use the time to work out plots, figure out jokes, that sort of thing. It's lower-intensity work and lets me recharge, but I also get to be productive while I'm recharging and playing with all the dogs at the park. I'll talk to myself while I'm walking too, because I like dialogue to sound natural, and saying it out loud helps with that. It makes me look a little crazy, but whatever. Really I guess my greatest life hack is to not care what strangers think about you!

What's your favorite to-do list manager?

I've tried a few, but I always come back to my tried-and-true "todo.txt" that lives on my desktop.

Besides your phone and computer, what gadget can't you live without?

Glasses! Otherwise I can't easily see my phone and computer and it's so sad.

What's everyday thing are you better at than anyone else?

I believe I can state with authority that I have spent more time thinking about the novelization of Back To The Future than any other alive human. My page-by-page review is my proof of this. I know you wanted an "everyday thing" but who among us can truly say they don't think about Back to the Future at least once per day?

I'm Ryan North, Creator of Dinosaur Comics, and This Is How I Work

Above: Part of an Adventure Time script.

What's your sleep routine like?

When I was a kid I had to get up at 6 to catch a 7 AM bus into school, and once I started grad school I relaxed that to 7 AM. So I'm usually up at 7 sharp (alarm set so I can hear the news) and then in bed when I start to get sleepy, which is normally between 11 and midnight. I really value my sleep. And I wish it were somehow super awesome to say "I really value my sleep."

Are you more of an introvert or an extrovert?

Oh, total introvert. But I love pals and that slides me more towards extrovert, I guess? I just want all my friends and I to live in a giant house which I call "Pal Mansion." Is that so wrong?

Fill in the blank: I'd kill to see ________ answer these same questions.

Patrick Stewart, but only if I'm the one asking the questions. And he invites me over to his place for the interview. And we start talking and he asks me in his stentorian voice about my hopes and dreams and we talk about our lives and loves and fears, and it's just?it's just so real.

What's the best advice you've ever received?

"Never stop learning." Also "if you find a job you like it won't feel like work." So let's assume at some point in the past my father pulled me aside and said "Never stop learning, also, on another topic, if you find a job you like then it won't feel like work. Randy out, yo."

Anything else you want to add for readers/fans?

I love getting email, but there's only so much time in the day to write back to it, so please don't hate me if I never do. I have such good intentions!

The How I Work series asks heroes, experts, brilliant, and flat-out productive people to share their shortcuts, workspaces, routines, and more. Every Wednesday we'll feature a new guest and the gadgets, apps, tips, and tricks that keep them going. Have someone you'd kill to see featured, or questions you think we should ask? Email Tessa.

Italy 9 - Wales 26: Leigh leaves Rome in ruins

We adapted really well to the conditions and the deluge

ROB HOWLEY was singing in the rain in Rome yesterday.

The Wales coach hailed his players after they adapted superbly at a soaking Stadio Olimpico.

And victory kept them firmly in RBS 6 Nations title contention.

Second-half tries from centre Jonathan Davies and wing Alex Cuthbert and 16 points from the boot of full-back Leigh Halfpenny (below) sent Italy packing.

?We adapted really well to the conditions and the deluge,? said Howley. ?We had patience and took our opportunities. Our scrum was very impressive and gave us the platform.

?International rugby is about fine margins and it was testament to the attitude of the players and their application in tough conditions.?

For the second successive Six Nations Test,?Wales?did not concede a try and Italy rarely threatened them as?Wales?recorded a third successive win in Rome.

?The first half was tough. The conditions had a huge impact on the way both teams played but our game-management was excellent,? skipper Ryan Jones said.

?All 23 players showed composure and maturity. It was a good day at the office in the scrum ? there are six very happy front-row forwards in our changing room.?

DNP Switched On Moving forward with leaning back

Just a few months have passed between the introduction of the Droid DNA and the new HTC One, but it seems that HTC has been turned upside down in that time. While the Droid DNA was introduced in conjunction with Verizon and can't be a wholly representative picture of how HTC might have introduced the device otherwise, it was a spec- and design-driven product -- a 5-inch, 1080p display with a 440-ppi density that appeared to spill over onto sides that included a microperforation.

In contrast, little was said about the HTC One hardware itself until later in the device's introduction, surprising because the HTC One is not only the most attractive handset the company has ever built, but also certainly one of the most attractive on the market. While it is an Android device, the casing builds upon the tapered, Windows Phone-inspired 8X, substituting aluminum for polycarbonate. That said, there is also the spillover glass effect found on the Droid DNA. The HTC One retains the 1080p display found in the Droid DNA. However, since the screen is smaller, the pixel density is even higher (468 ppi) than in that record-breaking device.

Hong Kong unveils more property-cooling measures

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong is imposing higher stamp duties and home loan curbs on property transactions, officials said on Friday, the latest effort to cool an overheated property sector that boasts some of the world's most expensive apartments.

Financial Secretary John Tsang said "exuberance has regained momentum" in Hong Kong's property market, and for this reason stamp duties for flats would be increased across the board for most buyers.

Tsang said the measures were needed to keep the potential economic risk from spreading in the financial hub.

"The risk of an asset bubble is increasing. If we allow the bubble to grow, in the end it will affect the macroeconomy and also the stability of the financial system. It will be very damaging to society," Tsang told reporters.

"These measures will help narrow the supply-demand gap, contribute to the stable development of our property market and the stability of our financial system," Tsang said.

For flats costing less than HK$2 million (about $258,000), the stamp duty would be increased from HK$100 to 1.5 percent of the transaction price, while the stamp duty for other properties would be doubled to as much as 8.5 percent of the residential transaction price.

The increased stamp duties, however, would not apply to Hong Kong residents buying residential property for the first time in the city, in a bid to allow new local homemakers to enter the market, while other limited exemptions were possible.

The government also said it would standardize the stamp duty regime for non-residential properties such as shops, factory space, office space and even car parking spaces to avoid speculative hot money flowing into these other categories.

"It will help forestall any possible shift in exuberance from the residential market to the non-residential market by raising the costs," said Tsang.

This week, the controversial sale of 360 hotel suites by leading local developer Cheung Kong Holdings drew scrutiny, with buyers able to avoid paying regular stamp duties charged to residential units, given the commercial nature of the suites. Tsang, however, refused to be drawn on whether the latest move was an attempt to close off this legal loophole.

The city's ultra-low interest rate environment, tight supply and abundant liquidity, pushed property prices up 2 percent in January, Tsang said, while overall residential property prices have jumped 120 percent since 2008.

While Tsang said some of the market frothiness had come from hot money flows from the United States in response to quantitative easing and a low interest rate regime, this could change earlier than some people expect. That would cause mortgage repayments to balloon while "price fluctuation risks would be increased", he said.

The city's de facto central bank, meanwhile, issued mandatory guidelines to banks to tighten home loan approval criterion including maximum loan-to-value ratios of mortgage loans for all commercial and industrial properties. These would be lowered 10 percentage points from existing applicable levels.

Some analysts expected the latest round of measures to help arrest the rise in property prices, for now.

"There will be a big impact in the short term, the transactions will decrease, as well as speculation," said Thomas Lam, director of research at Knight Frank "But I think they (the government) will do more if the property price continues to increase after 3 months."

The latest round of property cooling in Hong Kong comes on a series of seemingly tit-for-tat moves by the Singapore government that has also sought to rein in its own market.

As centers of finance and trade, Singapore and Hong Kong are on the front line of global hot money flows. Each exports the equivalent of more than 100 percent of their GDP each year. They're not the only Asian countries confronting this problem. Others affected include South Korea, Thailand and even China.

Since October 2009, the Hong Kong government has taken a series of steps to curb prices, including a 15 percent property tax on foreign buyers, mortgage restrictions and taxes on quick resales. However, home-price pressures have continued to pose policy challenges for officials.

As Hong Kong felt an initial squeeze from property measures imposed in October, including the 15 percent tax on foreign buyers, private home sales in Singapore jumped nearly 30 percent in December from November.

Government of Canada Invests in Innovative R&D Projects with Canadian Auto Industry

WATERLOO, ONTARIO--(Marketwire - Feb. 22, 2013) - The Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State (Science and Technology), was at the University of Waterloo to announce funding for new research and development projects that the automotive industry has identified as priorities. Funded by the Automotive Partnership Canada initiative, these projects will reduce harmful vehicle emissions, improve the efficiency of electric and hybrid vehicles, and protect Canadian drivers by upgrading vehicle safety.

"Our Government is investing in automotive research and development to help usher in greener, better-performing vehicles. Our support also creates jobs and strengthens the economy," said Minister of State Goodyear. "Automotive Partnership Canada does this by enhancing research capacity, driving innovation, and increasing the competitiveness of our industries."

These university-industry partnerships will receive more than $21.4 million in total project support. This includes over $11 million in funding through the Automotive Partnership Canada initiative, and more than $10.4 million from industry and other partners.

The University of Waterloo is receiving$1.1 million to develop high-strength steels tailored for individual car components, such as fenders and door frames. These tailored components will have high strength regions that prevent them from intruding into the vehicle in the case of a crash. Of the total amount, the Government of Canada is contributing $605,000, with the remaining support provided by Honda R&D Americas, Magna, ArcelorMittal Dofasco and the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation.

"Canada's automotive sector attracts some of the most talented researchers because it offers opportunities for innovations that can have a great impact on the lives of Canadians," said Dr. Suzanne Fortier, President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). "These most recently announced projects are helping to keep Canada on the leading edge of automotive advancements in safety, efficiency and manufacturing."

Announced in April 2009, Automotive Partnership Canada is a five-year, $145-million initiative that supports collaborative R&D and pushes the Canadian automotive industry to greater levels of innovation. As an industry-driven initiative, automotive companies play a key role by providing both financial support and essential in-kind contributions to ensure the research projects' success.

Other previously funded Automotive Partnership Canada research focused on the development of a battery pack thermal management system for hybrid electric vehicles, more efficient systems for lightweight wheel production, enhanced performance catalytic converters, improved fuel cell technology and improved automotive manufacturing workplace design and ergonomics.

As the lead agency within Automotive Partnership Canada, NSERC is a federal agency that helps make Canada a country of discoverers and innovators for all Canadians. The agency supports almost 30,000 post-secondary students and postdoctoral fellows in their advanced studies. NSERC promotes discovery by funding approximately 12,000 professors every year and fosters innovation by encouraging over 2,400 Canadian companies to participate and invest in post-secondary research projects.

Since 2006, the Government of Canada has invested nearly $8 billion in initiatives supporting science, technology and the growth of innovation firms in Canada, including $5 billion for advanced research, education and training; $2 billion for post-secondary infrastructure; and $1 billion for applied research and financing. This funding has helped to make Canada a world leader in post-secondary education research and to create the knowledge and highly skilled workforce that are required for a more prosperous economy.

Watching molecules grow into microtubes

Feb. 22, 2013 ? Sometimes the best discoveries come by accident.

A team of researchers at Washington University in St. Louis, headed by Srikanth Singamaneni, PhD, assistant professor of mechanical engineering & materials science, unexpectedly found the mechanism by which tiny single molecules spontaneously grow into centimeter-long microtubes by leaving a dish for a different experiment in the refrigerator.

Once Singamaneni and his research team, including Abdennour Abbas, PhD, a former postdoctoral researcher at Washington University, Andrew Brimer, a senior undergraduate majoring in mechanical engineering, and Limei Tian, a fourth-year graduate student, saw that these molecules had become microtubes, they set out to find out how.

To do so, they spent about six months investigating the process at various length scales (nano to micro) using various microscopy and spectroscopy techniques.

The results were published in the journal Small.

"What we showed was that we can actually watch the self-assembly of small molecules across multiple length scales, and for the first time, stitched these length scales to show the complete picture," Singamaneni says. "This hierarchical self-organization of molecular building blocks is unprecedented since it is initiated from a single molecular crystal and is driven by vesiclular dynamics in water."

Self-assembly, a process in which a disordered collection of components arrange themselves into an ordered structure, is of growing interest as a new paradigm in creating micro- and nanoscale structures and functional systems and subsystems. This novel approach of making nano- and microstructures and devices is expected to have numerous applications in electronics, optics and biomedical applications.

The team used small molecules p-aminothiophenol (p-ATP) or p-aminophenyl disulfide added to water with a small amount of ethanol. The molecules first assembled into nanovesicles then into microvesicles and eventually into centimeter-long microtubules. The vesicles stick onto the surface of the tube, walk along the surface and attach themselves, causing the tube to grow longer and wider. The entire process takes mere seconds, with the growth rate of 20 microns per second.

"While it was exciting to watch the self-assembly of these molecules, we are even more excited about the implications of the self-assembly of such small molecules," Singamaneni says. "This mechanism can be used to load the vesicles with the desired macromolecules, such as proteins, antibodies or antibiotics, for example, and build microtubes with a biological function."

Singamaneni says his research team collaborated with researchers in Singapore who are experts in molecular crystals, as well as with colleagues in the Department of Chemistry.

"We hope that once we can co-assemble some functional nanostructures along with these small molecules, then these molecular assemblies can have applications in biological sensors and chemical sensors," Singamaneni says.

Funding for this research was provided by the U.S. Army Research Office and Army Research Laboratory.

Sony reveals how the PlayStation 4 Eye works

PS4 Eye promises to unlock your PlayStation at a glance, tips hat to Kinect

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida has dished the dirt on how the company's latest camera accessory will work. The PlayStation 4 Eye comes with a pair of 1,280 x 800 cameras, four microphones and an 85-degree field of view. The two lenses are designed to be used in a variety of ways, including triangulating the 3D space, gesture recognition, Kinect-style body tracking, and in conjunction with accessories like the Wonderbook or DualShock 4 controller. "It's not just a way to identify your player number, it also works like a PS Move," Yoshida said of the new DualShock's light bar. "It's an extension of the PS Move technology that we incorporated into the DualShock so that the camera can see where it is."

The Sony Studios chief used a PS Eye-style AR game as an example, saying that with the original camera, one lens had to do everything. With the new unit, one camera will concentrate on capturing the action and ensuring good picture quality, while the other is dedicated to motion tracking. Another reason that the Move functionality was incorporated into the DualShock is to enable the console know where you're sitting in relation to the TV (and your on-screen character). The company is also aiming to enable users to take 3D pictures and video and store it on the console. As for the microphones in the new Eye and how that'll impact interaction with the PlayStation 4 on a system level, Yoshida wasn't giving up any details. Though he said it'll be incorporated into games (a la Kinect voice commands on Xbox 360 games), he wouldn't give up whether you could use your voice to control the PlayStation 4 on a system level.

Biden to attend gun violence conference in Conn.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? Vice President Joe Biden and the parents of a student killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School are scheduled to take part Thursday in a gun violence conference at the Connecticut university that Adam Lanza briefly attended a few years before his deadly rampage.

Government officials, gun control advocates and members of law enforcement will also attend the conference at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, where Lanza took classes as a teenager, three years before his deadly assault killed 26 people inside the Newtown school less than 15 miles away.

U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, who organized the conference with two other members of the state's congressional delegation, said the proximity to Newtown was of "symbolic significance," although the Western Connecticut wasn't chosen because of Lanza's attendance there.

"There will be people with enormous expertise speaking, but also Connecticut and Newtown residents who have felt the full burden and brunt of this horrific tragedy," he said.

Biden plans to address Thursday's conference on the president's gun-control proposals, which include universal background checks for gun owners, a ban on military-style assault weapons and limiting the size of ammunition magazines.

Chris and Lynn McDonnell, whose 7-year-old daughter, Grace, was among the first graders shot by Lanza, will take part in a panel discussion on gun violence. A second panel will discuss mental health and school safety initiatives.

Lanza began classes at Western Connecticut as a 16-year-old, earning a 3.26 grade point average before taking his last class in the summer of 2009. Classmates recalled him as quiet, a trait some thought was a result of him being younger than his peers.

Newtown's first selectman, Pat Llodra, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, State Police Captain Dale Hourigan and the mayors of Bridgeport and Hartford all plan to participate, along with other experts in the fields of mental health, law enforcement, and education.

Gun makers and lobbyists were not invited, which didn't come as a surprise to Robert Crook, the executive director of the Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen.

"We haven't been invited to virtually anything," Crook said. "I would think it would be appropriate to have someone there to represent the gun owners."

Blumenthal said lawmakers have reached out and talked to gun-rights advocates, and said they will have an opportunity in hearings and other forums to express their point of view, but not on Thursday.

He said the idea is to come up with solutions that will keep guns out of the hands of criminals, domestic abusers and people with serious mental illnesses.

"It's not supposed to be a debate," he said. "It's really an effort to mobilize and galvanize support for these measures."

I think they may be same at this point in time barring any last minute changes by Ryoma which I doubt given the cost to redesign, retool and the loss from Maximas already produced. Also means that Ryoma may indeed be outsourcing production to Taiwan or PRC which I am ok with as long as QC and standards are maintained and the head performs. This means that it is also now very conceivable that many other JDM boutique brands also outsource. Again, nothing wrong in my books as long as standards are maintained. Frankly, I strongly suspected this a long time back for various reasons.

So is Ryoma acknowledging as well that they are 3 models : Type V, Type G and Type S and what they are supposed to be? Could be like the V-Spec, D1 and Premia? Any pics :-)

Iowa Football Coaching Carousel 2013: Bobby Kennedy, Jim Reid Join Hawkeye Coaching Staff

Former Longhorns receiver coach and Virginia defensive coordinator land in Iowa City.

Three out and, so far, two in.

Iowa announced yesterday that Bobby Kennedy and Jim Reid were joining the Hawkeye coaching staff for the 2013 season. Kennedy will assume the wide receiver coaching position vacated by Soup Campbell. Reid will coach on the defensive side of the ball, but his position has not yet been defined.

Kennedy's name has been floating around message boards since mid-season. He just finished two seasons on Jon Embree's staff at Colorado, which, frankly, did not go well. He's not here for his contributions for the Buffaloes, though. Kennedy got the job because he spent seven seasons as wide receivers coach at Texas under Greg Davis. He has a keen understanding of whatever it is Davis is attempting to do with the passing game, and should be an effective teacher. Kennedy also had stints as wide receivers coach at Washington and Wyoming, as running backs coach at Arizona, and as both at Wake Forest.

In addition to his work as receivers coach, Kennedy spent six seasons as recruiting coordinator for the Longhorns, and took his Texas contacts to Colorado with him. He only had one season to truly recruit, but managed to land three wide receivers and a tight end out of Texas for the Buffs. Two of those players, Gerald Thomas and Vincent Hobbs, contributed more than 15 receptions as true freshmen. Iowa can either use Davis (in limited capacity), Kennedy, and LeVar Woods as the tips of a trident aimed deep in the heart of Texas, or can move Woods to other areas and rely on Kennedy to recruit Texas. Regardless of what they decide, Kennedy and Davis represent an effort to recruit the Lone Star State not before seen under Kirk Ferentz.

Kennedy's hire -- and Campbell's departure -- also shows that Ferentz is willing to give Davis full control of the passing game, from coaching personnel to recruiting to playcalling. Davis likely spent most of 2012 telling Ferentz that he didn't have the position coaching or the players to run the offense he wants to run. He now has five new scholarship wide receivers, and a hand-picked wide receivers coach to teach them this offense. It's time to put up or shut up.

Jim Reid spent the last three years as the defensive coordinator at Virginia, with past head coaching experience at VMI, Richmond, and UMass. For a coach with 30 years of experience, Reid has remarkably little background as an assistant coach, serving brief stints as defensive line coach at Syracuse and Bucknell and outside linebackers coach for the Miami Dolphins under Tony Sparano. He's got some tangential Bill Parcells ties, having coached under Sparano and Dan Henning. He also overlapped with Ferentz as a Yankee conference head coach; Reid was running UMass while Ferentz was head coach at Maine.

Reid is a devout 4-3 proponent. He was responsible for turning Virginia's defense from a 3-4 back to the traditional 4-3 setup. His defense last year was not exactly solid (28.9 points per game allowed, 71st nationally), but his termination was surprising to many fans who blamed the sputtering Virginia offense for the team's 4-8 finish. Coach Mike London said he wanted a more aggressive defense and immediately jumped into bed with Jon Tenuta, so you can see why Kirk Ferentz found Reid attractive. Reid's recruiting background fills some gaps left behind by Wilson and Ken O'Keefe. He successfully recruited the mid-Atlantic for Virginia, and his long background in New England fills the Northeastern quota on staff.

The press release announcing yesterday's hires listed Reid as a "defensive assistant," but coach limitations leave little room for a generalist on staff. Presumably, Reid will move to a specific position or become defensive coordinator. His lack of specific defensive back experience shouldn't be an issue; Ferentz has shown that he is perfectly willing to move an experienced coach to a new position, as he did with Darrell Wilson and Reese Morgan last season. But the engineer of Iowa's golden age of defensive backs is still on staff and just finished a first moderately successful season as defensive coordinator. Moving Parker to defensive backs coach, giving Reid the old Norm Parker position as inside linebackers coach, and making Phil and Reid co-coordinators could make the most sense.

Remains of the Day: iOS Update Fixing Passcode Vulnerability May Arrive Next Week

Remains of the Day: iOS Update Fixing Passcode Vulnerability May Arrive Next WeekApple might fix two big iOS 6.1 bugs next week, Skype launches Video Messages, BitTorrent launches a new service, and an employee error causes problems for McAfee users on Mac.

  • Apple to Address Security Issues in iOS 6.1.2 Update in the Next Week or So A German blog reported today that Apple is going to release iOS 6.1.2 sometime next week in order to address both the Microsoft Exchange bug and passcode vulnerability. The report states that the update will arrive sometime before February 21st. [9to5 Mac]
  • Skype Video Messages Launches for Mac, iPhone, and Android (Hands-On) Skype's new Video Message feature is now live for iOS, Android, and Mac. Users can now send three-minute long recorded video messages to each other, with the option to download and save them on the Mac client. However, you'll only get twenty free messages?after that, you'll have to shell out $4.99/month to subscribe to Skype Premium to continue using the feature. [The Verge]
  • BitTorrent Sharpens Enterprise Focus, Launches SoShare To Send Large Files, Offering First Terabyte Free Today BitTorrent launched a new service for sending large files from one computer to another. Called SoShare, it's currently out in beta and built on BitTorrents P2P framework. While in beta, the service will be free and allow users to send up to a terabyte of data, and host it for thirty days at a time. [TechCrunch]
  • A World of Hurt After McAfee Mistakenly Revokes Key for Signing Mac Apps An error made by a McAfee employee has resulted in all McAfee users on OS X having their digital key for app certification revoked. As a result, until the problem is fixed, users have no way of telling if a certificate is genuine or not. There's no estimate for when the problem will be resolved, but there isn't much reason to have a Mac antivirus program in the first place, provided you're careful. [Ars Technica]

Michelle Obama plugs 'Beats of the Southern Wild'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Oscar-nominated film "Beasts of the Southern Wild" has gotten Michelle Obama's ringing endorsement.

The first lady played host Wednesday at a White House workshop for about 80 middle- and high-school students from the District of Columbia and New Orleans, in the state where the movie was set. Students saw the film, then questioned cast members and the director.

Mrs. Obama said she saw "Beasts" last summer and considers it one of the most powerful and important movies released in a long time.

The film tells the mythical tale of a 6-year-old girl named Hushpuppy struggling to survive in the southern Delta with her ailing father as a storm approaches. Her world consists of a small but tightly-knit shantytown community on the bayou with wild animals, both real and imagined.

It really is a jungle out there: Online dating safety tips to follow | Metro

While the new online dating world is full of opportunities, it can also be full of peril.

Police have noticed the excitement that comes with getting into the online world can attract people who want to harm people physically and financially.

Acting Sgt. Kathy Macdonald, with the Calgary Police Service, said new relationships sometimes prevent people from seeing the bigger picture.

?When people get wrapped up in a relationship they can?t see what?s going on,? she said.

Macdonald said fraud artists using online dating sites can go after many potential victims in just one day.

?They will often get a hold of a lot of people at the same time,? she said.

She said scam artists often approach someone and strike up a conversation, before running into sudden and unexplained financial difficulties.

She said if they receive money from their intended victims, new problems will emerge and there will be more requests for help.

Macdonald said there could also be physical dangers and she cautions people to take things slowly in the early days of a new relationship.

?Listen to your intuition and be aware of your surroundings,? she advised.

Macdonald said making the first date a group meeting can be a good idea, but it?s essential that it be in a public place and that you tell people where you?re going.

?Really you don?t know that person, you don?t know who is going to show up,? she said.

Great Tips On How To Manage Your Allergies | Your Health And ...

February 13th, 2013 by ajadm

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Spring can be a very beautiful thing unless you are too busy sneezing, coughing, wheezing and wiping your eyes to be able to enjoy it. If you identify with the many people who have seasonal allergies, read this article for tips on allergies.

Never forget your allergy medicines if you plan to travel. When you are away from home, you can never be sure what types of allergens you may come into contact with. If you have ever had a severe allergic reaction, you may need to bring an Epi-pen along, as well. This is a quick shot of epinephrine which can waylay many allergy attacks.

Be certain the body mass index of your body falls in the healthy range, and be certain your diet is a nutritious one. If you?re underweight and your diet lacks essential nutrients, the body will be prone to allergens and the immune system will not be strong.

TIP! Try a new antihistamine at home first. These medications are known for having ingredients that can slow down your reaction time or even make you fall asleep.

Go to an allergist. You may be of the opinion that nothing can be done about your allergies; however, you would be wrong. An allergy specialist can successfully determine the exact cause of your reactions, and recommend the most suitable treatment. A treatment plan can help you live a fulfilling life.

If at all possible, never open your windows during hours in which pollen count is at its highest. It?s always nice to get some fresh air into your home, but any beneficial effects of the fresh air may be countered by the increased pollen if you open your window during peak pollen hours. Watch your local news program to see when pollen is highest in your area, or visit the weather section of local news websites to learn about times and levels. Open your windows after this time to let your home air out.

It is not uncommon for city dwellers to be allergic to air pollution in their area. If you reside in an urban area you should try venturing out to an area that does not have the pollution problems that the city has. You may find that your allergies are related to where you reside.

TIP! People often consider bleach as something that cleans and kills mold. A lot of the time bleach is harmful to those with allergies.

To help combat some of your indoor allergies, make sure you are vacuuming often. Make sure your vacuum has a HEPA filter. These filters are great because they pick up all the dust, pollen, mold, dust mites and many different types of particles which are known to make allergies worse.

The time and the place you exercise outdoors has a lot to do with allergies. The harder and longer you exercise, the more difficult it becomes to breathe. Try exercising inside during the times of the day when there is a low pollen count to avoid taking in too many allergens inside your body.

Give stinging nettles a shot. This natural remedy can help with allergies. The actual plant can be irritating to the skin, hence the name, but the dried leaves can be ingested in pill form in order to soothe the itching and discomfort caused by different allergens.

Look into homeopathic treatments for allergy symptoms. Many people take allergy medications, but this is not the only option. They often don?t cause the side effects as prescription medications, and many times work more effectively than over-the-counter remedies. Some homeopathic remedies can now be found at typical drugstores or health food stores.

TIP! One way to keep allergies under control is to not use the attic fan in your house, if you have one. The premise of an attic fan is that it draws air from the outside and pushes it into your home for circulation.

If you are going to be exercising outside during the times of the year that there are high pollen levels, do so either very early in the morning or late in the evening. There are lower amounts of pollen during these times, so optimize these time periods.

If you notice the same same symptoms show up each time you have allergies, try treating the individual symptoms. You can often do this effectively, rather than try to stay away from what caused the allergy in the first place. This means people who suffer from dry eyes, for example, should always carry some type of eye drops. You can also use this principle if you have a congested nose or dry eyes.

Maintain a very clean home. Try and avoid creating a living space that will promote your allergies. There are a lot of things that can be done to make your home healthy, staring with basic cleaning.

At different times during the life cycle, people are more susceptible to certain allergens. For instance, proteins become exposed to babies through certain foods. This explains why food allergies are so common in little ones. As infants grow into children, their exposure to protein allergens increases and they might develop an allergy to pollen. Do not discount the possibility of an allergic reaction in your child simply because there has never been a reaction to non-food allergens in the past.

TIP! If you suffer from any type of allergy, avoid smoking pipes or cigarettes. Allergens will make breathing harder, since they stuff up the nose.

Make sure you can tell the difference between allergies and the common cold. Colds last awhile, while allergies come and go and annoy you. If you feel you always have a cold, you might just have allergies. Talk with your physician about how you are feeling, if you are not sure.

If you have allergies, you already know how detrimental they can be when it comes to enjoying your life. However, you do not simply have to sit back and quietly suffer from your allergy symptoms. There are effective treatments available that can significantly reduce or even eliminate these symptoms. Begin by using the information contained in this article and put it to good use right away.

Beyonce joined by Oprah at documentary premiere

NEW YORK (AP) ? Oprah Winfrey made a surprise appearance Tuesday night at the premiere of Beyonce's HBO documentary, 'Life is But a Dream,' posing with the star and speaking of the candor she showed in making it.

The film takes a no-holds-barred look at moments in the 31-year old singer's life, including her miscarriage, reports of faking her pregnancy, and firing her father as her manager.

While the revelations Beyonce makes about herself in the film are comparable to the results Winfrey usually gets from her tough style of interviewing, the talk show host gave kudos to the singer.

Winfrey said Beyonce did a "much better job" of telling her own story. "I wouldn't have been in the bedroom and in the closet and in the car and on vacation," she said.

Egypt court jails Israeli for two years: court sources

CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian court sentenced an Israeli man to two years in prison for crossing illegally into the Sinai peninsula, court sources said on Tuesday.

Egypt said in December it had arrested the man after he slipped into the Sinai's Taba region and took photographs of security buildings.

State media at that time identified the man, Andrei Pshenichnikov, as a 24-year-old army officer. Israeli media said he was a civilian and a pro-Palestinian activist.

The ruling by the court in the Nuweiba area of Sinai was issued on Monday.

The court sources said Pshenichnikov had not given a convincing explanation for why he crossed into Egypt illegally when he could have entered as a tourist.

Sinai has suffered from lax security since Egypt's 2011 uprising, which overthrew President Hosni Mubarak. Egypt regained the peninsula, which Israel occupied during a 1967 war, after the two signed a peace deal in 1979.

The two countries have maintained an uneasy peace since then, and their relations have been marred by several high-profile cases in which Egyptian authorities accused Israel of espionage.

Israeli tourists have continued to holiday in the Sinai, although in lower numbers since a spate of bomb attacks on resorts from 2004 to 2006.

Shrinking ozone hole is smallest in 10 years

BIRA / IASB

This graphic shows the ozone hole over Antarctica in blue. The depletion in 2012 was smaller than any time in the past 10 years.

By Stephanie Pappas
LiveScience

Good news from Antarctica: The hole in the ozone layer is shrinking, new measurements reveal.

Ozone is a molecule made of three oxygen atoms. It's relatively highly concentrated in a particular layer of the stratosphere about 12 miles to 19 miles (20 to 30 kilometers) above Earth's surface. This ozone layer prevents ultraviolet light from reaching Earth's surface ? a good thing, given that UV light causes sunburn and skin cancer.

Ever since the early 1980s, though, a hole in this layer?has developed over Antarctica during September to November, decreasing ozone concentration by as much as 70 percent. The cause is human-produced chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which were once heavily used in aerosols and refrigeration.

By international agreement, CFCs have been phased out of use. The policy has real effects, new satellite observations reveal. In 2012, the hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica was smaller than it has ever been in the last 10 years.

The new observations, announced by the European Space Agency (ESA) on Friday, come from Europe's Met Op weather satellite, which has an instrument specifically designed to sense ozone concentrations. The findings suggest that the phase-out of CFCs is working, the ESA reports.

Antarctica?is particularly vulnerable to ozone-depleting substances, because high winds cause a vortex of cold air to circulate over the continent. In the resulting frigid temperatures, CFCs are especially effective at depleting ozone. The result is that people in the Southern Hemisphere are at increased risk of exposure from UV radiation.

CFCs persist in the atmosphere for a long time, so it may take until the middle of the century for ozone concentrations to rebound to 1960s levels, the ESA reports. However, the hole in the ozone over Antarctica should completely close in the next few decades.

The Importance of Long-Term Care Planning - Alice Reiter Feld Law ...

If you were ever a Boy Scout, you remember the motto: Be Prepared.

You?re not a Boy Scout or Girl Scout anymore. But it still makes sense to be prepared ? especially where your health and your finances are concerned.

These are some important issues to discuss with your attorney ? before a crisis.

FAMILY DYNAMICS: I always tell clients that, when considering long-term care needs, they need to consider family dynamics. Are there squabbles or resentments? If so, these will probably intensify in a crisis situation.

LEGAL ISSUES: Are your legal documents up to date? If so, you?re in the minority. In addition to discussing inheritance issues, I always discuss with my clients any changes they may need to make in their will or trust. Family circumstances are always changing ? births, deaths, divorces, self-destructive behavior by heirs, second marriages, etc. If your documents aren?t appropriate for NOW, they?re not appropriate ? period!

THE DOCUMENTS ? ADVANCE DIRECTIVES, DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY, HEALTH SURROGATE, LAST WILL & TESTAMENT, LIVING WILL: Florida law is very specific. These documents have to meet legal requirements, and must leave no room for doubt. And if you try the do-it-yourself approach, they may not be recognized as legal.

ARRANGING FOR FINANCIAL DECISIONS TO BE HANDLED IF YOU CAN?T: If you don?t do this, you?re probably subjecting your family to a long and tortuous Guardianship proceeding in court. And if you don?t do it right, you may be disqualified from receiving Medicaid or Veterans? benefits.

FIRST-STEP FINANCIAL ISSUES: How do I pay for long-term care insurance? Many people don?t even realize they may be entitled to Medicaid or Veterans? benefits, or other resources.

CAREGIVER ISSUES: You?ll need to know about community resources, housing options, caregiver options, Care Managers, etc.

No doubt you?ve got questions. We have the answers.

At The Law Offices of Alice Reiter Feld & Associates, we?ve been answering our clients? questions for the past 33 years. And we?ve answered them for thousands of South Florida families ? about comprehensive estate planning, wills, trusts, powers of attorney, asset-protection plans, assistance with Medicaid or the VA?and long-term care planning.

If you?ve got questions, we?ve got answers. And we?re just a phone call away.

Facebook 'confession page' targets Boise high school

by Andrea Lutz

Bio | Email | Follow: @KTVBandrealutz

Updated today at 9:36 AM

BOISE -- A national social media trend is targeting a local high school, and it's known as a Facebook ?confession page.?

?Lion Confessions? was created Friday.

By Monday night it had grown to 260 likes.

The site allows students from Borah High the chance to anonymously confess about what goes on at school.

There is no way of knowing if the students who are posting anonymously are actually Borah students, but KTVB can confirm there are Borah students liking the page and commenting on posts.

The posts vary, with many of them confessing about having sex or doing drugs. Some give the names of students, while others talk about teachers.

However, some of these posts are even more concerning. A post written Saturday talks about how a student brought a gun to school.

Confession #64:

I snuck a glock into school for a whole day just to see if I'd make it, ended up being the most exciting day of my life.

In another post, a female student said she had an affair with a teacher.

Confession #6:
I slept with one of the male teachers when I went there four years ago. He's still one of everybody's favorites
.

The ?confession page? is starting to become a national trend. Last week, the Tucson School District had so-called "confession" Facebook sites shutdown in three of its high schools.

Facebook claims it will remove pages and posts that contain objectionable topics if they are made aware of it. That is how the school district in Tucson made it happen.

KTVB was first to alert the Boise School District Monday morning about the site.

Spokesperson Dan Hollar said the Borah school resource officer had already contacted the site administrator and asked for the page to be taken down.

Hollar also said the Boise Police Department has been made aware of the page.

Monday, KTVB asked students walking out of school for the day, about the page. Most of them didn?t even know it existed, but when we showed them the page, all had something to say about it.

?I think somebody is getting carried away. I mean I just don?t think that stuff should be there,? said Borah sophomore Hyrum Hoge.

?I think that's terrible. That is not okay at all,? said Borah student Damian Miller.

Hollar stressed that the page was in no way affiliated with Borah High School or the Boise School District. A disclaimer sits at the top of the site that says, ?This page is in no way run by or affiliated with Borah High School.?

Hollar also said, they take every credible threat very seriously. If school administration feels there is one, it will be investigated.

The Boise Police Department declined to comment on the Facebook page.
