Restaurant review: The Fat Duck, Bray ? Trivial Pursuits

In last year?s exceptional documentary Closer To The Edge, central protagonist Guy Martin says that the word unbelievable is bandied around too much these days. Despite spending most of the film inches from self-afflicted doom, he refutes claims that what he?s doing is unbelievable, going on to say ?When a man eats his own head, I will hold me hands up and say: ?THAT is unbelievable?.?

It?s hard to argue with his sentiment. In the overhyped, sensationalist world in which we live, reputations are built up and knocked down with one fell swoop of a journalist?s hand. Amid mediocrity, the good can seem great, the great can seem extraordinary and the plausible is often labelled with that word? Unbelievable.

It was with those sage words ringing in my ear that I arrived in the sleepy Berkshire village of Bray last week to go for dinner at Heston Blumenthal?s flagship restaurant The Fat Duck. Three Michelin stars are not handed out willy-nilly, indeed only four such places in the UK have ever been exalted to such pantheons of greatness, but at the same time I was wondering if food could ever achieve the tag affixed by so many to the place. Unbelievable.

The restaurant itself is a surprisingly low-key affair. No garish sign outside (it?s entirely possible to walk past and not even acknowledge its existence), nor lavish d?cor to distract you. The bells and whistles that adorn so many places are stripped out. This is a gastronomic experience, laid bare. Even the element of choice is removed, something an indecisive and non-fussy eater like myself is hugely appreciative of. You are seated, told what you are going to eat, and that is the end of it. The curtain is raised.

The first course (of fourteen, no less) was described as nitro poached aperitifs, a phrase that only really makes sense in hindsight. A choice of three classic pre-dinner drinks were offered, in mousse form, and poached in smoking liquid nitrogen before your very eyes. The waiter?s dexterity in their creation somehow transforming the scientific-looking canisters into an effortless art form. This is far from the only time this bridge between those age-old polar opposites is crossed during the course of the meal. The result here, resembling a small meringue, was ice cold yet melted in the mouth to leave the exact sensation of your drink of choice. It was a strong opening statement.

A tasty dish of red cabbage gazpacho was quickly followed by another of the eccentrically original creations that I had gone to experience. We were instructed to place a slither of oak moss on our tongues to prepare our palates for what was to follow. A slice of truffle toast sat aside a bowl of quail jelly, crayfish cream and chicken liver parfait. As the moss coated your mouth and prepared you for the earthy nature of the truffles, dry ice was poured liberally all over the table top, lending the impression that you were eating from the morning fog in a woodland clearing.

If you go down to the woods today?

At this stage it?s probably worth noting that the inner cynic is screaming at you to ignore this OTT mumbo jumbo, but the fact of the matter is that you have gone to this extraordinary place to be entertained both sensually and theatrically. If you buy into the drama of the piece, the rewards are obvious. It was, needless to say, phenomenal.

Next up was one of the signature dishes of the place, in the form of snail porridge. The equally famous eggs and bacon ice cream had sadly been removed from the menu a while ago, but when Heston first hit the scene all those years ago, it was these dishes that captured the nation?s imagination. Many would recoil at the thought of snail porridge, it sounds rather like the sort of elaborately repulsive things that the baddies in Roald Dahl novels would eat, like bird pie or snozcumbers. It was however deliciously textured, and topped off with some intricately shaved fennel. Another extraordinary taste sensation.

Snail porridge

It feels strange that I would not elaborate on the next course, but with fourteen to get through, the ?mere? excellently roasted foie gras (which I hasten to add would be a highlight of most other meals) seems somewhat too ordinary to mention. The same cannot be said of the next dish.

The mad hatter?s tea party from Alice in Wonderland was lovingly, deliciously and totally insanely recreated in front of our eyes. A gold pocket watch was dropped into a teapot of clear liquid, only to transform the contents into a tea-coloured consomm? once shaken. From here, you were instructed to pour the contents into a teacup of veal and miniature poached egg to create the famous mock-turtle soup that the Hatter served up. It was a hilarious concept really, and one that played on the inner child in everyone. A good, yet unspectacular tasting dish was elevated through interaction. Conceptually, it took the cheap thrill you got from adding your own salt to crisps, or shaking your own salad? and ramped up the theatre a notch or ten.

Mad Hatter?s Tea Party? Before and after.

The following dish was another headline act, the sounds of the sea. For this, we were given a conch shell with headphones coming out of it (as most conches do, naturally), and were instructed to listen to the noise of a gently-lapping shore as we marvelled over what was in front of us. A shoreline scene, briny sea crafted from edible froth, a sand substance made of anchovy and tapioca, all strewn with edible seaweed and sashimi, was to be the focus our four remaining senses. Heston has long claimed that sound can enhance your sense of taste and while it certainly added to the novelty of the experience, to my humble taste buds, the aural aspect was probably unnecessary. Bah, humbug!

The sounds of the sea

The rest of the menu was a mix of the extravagant and the excellent, with the two very rarely separated. Salmon poached in a liquorice gel proceeded immaculately cooked lamb. A cup of hot and iced tea (each entering a different side of your mouth to cause the oral equivalent of when you?re simultaneously washing your hands under a hot and cold tap) was followed by a tiny edible picnic, complete with a white chocolate rug and wild strawberries.

By the time the sweeties came out at the end, I was unsure as to whether it was even the same meal as when I started. Fans of Heston?s television programmes will know that he possesses a sizeable inner child, and this manifests itself in the doggie bag you are given to go home with. Edible wrappers, coconut tobacco, jam-filled playing cards. It?s straight out of Willy Wonker, and given that you almost certainly?won?t?have room for them after the meal, a nice way to carry the experience over to the following day.

Anyhow, in summation, what were my overall feelings. Of course it is pretentious, that?s without question. In terms of sheer quality, you can definitely do better elsewhere, while the bill is big enough to make a Toucan jealous. But that?s missing the point. This is food served as theatre. This is novelty and invention, in the grand traditions of this fair isle. And with that in mind I find it hard to deny that, despite my reservations over the word, much of what you eat at The Fat Duck is? unbelievable.

Plumbing Tips That Are Simple And Easy To Understand

Welcome to plumbing and its world! As you see, there are various types of equipment, techniques, and more. Given that plumbing is often a do-it-yourself type of project means that it can seem really difficult to identify what serves you best. You can get some helpful suggestions from this article.

Don?t just throw any old hot water tank into your water heater. Match the tank size with the heater for maximum efficiency. Knowing the number of people and appliances that use hot water in your home will let you know what size hot water tank will be the best for your home.

Efficient Shower

To save a significant amount of cash on your energy bill, install energy-efficient shower heads in all of your showers. Most households use a lot of hot water in the shower. When you install an energy-efficient shower head, you will reduce your home?s water consumption, which means money left in your pocket.

Watch for toilet leaks. A good tip for this is to take food coloring and put a few drops in your toilet tank. If colored water appears in the toilet bowl, this means your toilet is leaking.

Everyone in your family should know exactly where your home?s main water shut off valve is and how to use it. A water meter should be located on or near it. Fixtures, such as toilets and sinks, may also have individual shut-off valves. Inform all the members of your family where they can find the valve, and also show them how to shut them off if they are leaking.

If you awake to a frozen pipe, work on it using a hairdryer. By using a low level of heat the task may take longer, but you will not have to face the potential danger of using more hazardous methods, while at the same time avoiding that call to the local plumber.

Exposed Pipes

Always keep exposed pipes warm during freezing winter weather. When the weather get very cold, any exposed pipes have a greater chance to freeze. If they are coming in from the outside, indoor pipes can even freeze! Make sure you use a heater to keep water flowing through them.

If you have a toilet issue you are trying to identify, check the flapper, since it is the birthing place of a lot of problems. The flapper can eventually deteriorate, and can cause leaky toilets. Check the chain pressure first to make sure it is right. If it is, then the flapper is most likely the problem.

Before the cold weather hits, check any outside faucets for leaks or drips. If water is continually dripping, you need to make some repairs on your own before the temperature drops below freezing. Both plastic and metal pipes are susceptible to bursting when they freeze. Even tiny cracks can cause a lot of flood or water damage to your home.

Understanding how your tools work can give you a tremendous boost when plumbing. Read each and every manual, and utilize the information that can be found in libraries and the Internet about do-it-yourself projects. Have everything you need by way of tools and information before you attempt a repair on your own.

Plumbing Tools

Having plumbing tools around the house may feel like an unnecessary and expensive choice, but the tools could save you tons of money in the long run. There are many Internet videos that can show you how to make basic repairs to plumbing. Owning your own plumbing tools will prevent you from having to pay a professional plumber.

If your toilet is clogged, the water level in the toilet is low, and a plunger is not doing the trick, you may be able to resolve the problem by pouring a bucket of warm water into the toilet from waist level or higher. Once the water level is low again, you may repeated this procedure.

If you need a plumber, check out his or her credentials first. Certain plumbers may not have the necessary skill or experience to deal with more advanced plumbing jobs, and could make matters worse. It is always a good idea to get referrals from friends or family members, or to check out reviews about any plumber you are thinking about hiring.

When it comes to plumbing, you have lots of techniques that can be used in order to improve your skills and your system. Although certain aspects of plumbing remain the same for all applications, a technique that works for one home may not work for another. Hopefully you can use these tips to start doing your own plumbing.

AP Exclusive: Energy loan watchdog an Obama donor

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A veteran Wall Street executive who performed an independent review that exonerated the Obama administration's program of loans to energy companies contributed $52,500 to re-elect President Barack Obama in the months since completing his work, according to an Associated Press review of campaign records. The executive defended the integrity of his conclusions and said he decided to donate to Obama after his work was finished.

The campaign contributions to Obama started just weeks after Herbert M. Allison Jr., in congressional testimony in March, minimized concerns that the Energy Department was at high risk in more than $23 billion in federal loans awarded to green energy firms. Two weeks later, Allison began giving to the Obama campaign. His contributions to Obama and the Democratic National Committee totaled $52,500 by last month. Allison previously was the former head of the government's mass purchase of toxic Wall Street assets.

Allison did not make any Obama donations during his four-month review of Energy Department loans, and he has a long history of working with and giving money to both political parties. However, Republican Party officials and congressional critics of the energy loans said Allison's donations to Obama raise doubts about his objectivity and highlight his decision not to assess multimillion-dollar loans to two companies that later went into bankruptcy ? the troubled Solyndra solar panel company and Beacon Power, an energy storage firm.

Allison's report, completed in February and touted by the White House, acknowledged that the Energy Department could lose as much as $3 billion in loans, but it concluded that was far less than the $10 billion set aside by Congress for high-risk companies. The review did not assess the two bankrupt firms because those loans were no longer current. Allison told Congress that "DOE has negotiated protections in the loan agreements that enable it to cut off further funding and to demand more credit protection if projects do not meet targets." He also urged the Energy Department to toughen its oversight.

Allison defended the integrity of his review in an interview with The Associated Press. He said that he did not make the decision to back a presidential candidate until after he had finished his work and that his selection was approved by Energy Department lawyers before he began his review last October to "ensure there was no hint of bias or conflict of interest."

"I was on the record with the White House that this had to be completely independent review and they agreed," he said Wednesday in a telephone interview from his home in Westport, Conn. "It didn't hew to anybody's political suasion, I think, and it had to be fully factual or it wouldn't be credible."

Allison said he made his decision to support Obama after he saw "his administration in action and decided that I believe broadly in the things he's trying to accomplish."

Allison gave $2,500 to the Obama campaign on March 29, two weeks after he testified to the Senate Energy and Commerce Committee about his review. In May, he gave $15,000 to the Obama Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee that supports both the president's re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee. Allison gave the same amount to the fund again in June and then $20,000 more in July.

Allison has donated money to both parties, but his gifts in the past have tended to be much smaller than his current contributions, typically no more than $1,000 or $2,000, according to Federal Election Commission records. Allison explained his larger donations to the Obama campaign by saying "there's a hell of a lot more money in politics today than in years past and I decided I could go this route."

Allison has given to GOP figures such as Rep. Peter King of New York and Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, and to Democrats such as Rep. Carolyn Maloney of New York and former Nebraska Sen. Bob Kerrey. Allison's presidential preferences have been mostly Republicans ? Sen. John McCain of Arizona and former Sen. Bob Dole of Kansas. He also gave $2,300 to Obama in 2008, a year before Obama appointed Allison as an assistant treasury secretary.

The White House and the Obama campaign defended Allison, saying his donations did not taint his work as independent reviewer of the loans program. They pointed to his repeated hiring over the past two decades by Republican presidential administrations and GOP campaigns as justification that Allison had the independence to oversee troubled government programs.

"Mr. Allison was selected to do this study because of his relevant expertise and he is a public servant widely respected by Democrats and Republicans alike," said Eric Schultz, a White House spokesman. Schultz added that Allison's "analysis of the DOE loan portfolio was thorough and reliable as evident by additional independent reports affirming his findings." The Obama campaign said, "Having completed an independent assignment does not cost him his right to continue participating in the political progress on behalf of many candidates, as he has in the past."

A former Merrill Lynch executive, Allison worked for several Republican administrations and earned a reputation for tackling troubled federal programs. During McCain's failed 2000 presidential run, he served as national finance chairman and was rumored to be McCain's choice to become treasury secretary if he had won.

Allison was named by President George W. Bush to head Fannie Mae after the quasi-government home lending agency was placed in conservatorship in 2008 following the Wall Street collapse. A year later, Obama named Allison as an assistant treasury secretary to oversee the Troubled Asset Relief Program that Bush had created to stabilize Wall Street banks and investment houses reeling with toxic debt.

During his work at the Treasury Department, Allison was among top officials who crossed swords with TARP Inspector General Neil Barofsky, who accused the department of failing to properly track government bailout money given to banks and investment houses. Barofsky declined to comment about his dealings with Allison.

Allison left the Treasury Department in 2010 but returned last year to head up the review of energy loans. The White House agreed to the review in the wake of mounting Republican criticism after Solyndra, a California firm, went belly up. The bankruptcy cost U.S. taxpayers $528 million in lost loans.

Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fla., who chairs the House Energy Committee's oversight subcommittee, said Allison's donations to the Obama campaign back up GOP warnings this year that the White House review was suspect. Stearns said Allison's "financial support for the Obama campaign undermines (his) credibility and shows once again that the president did not want a careful, independent review of his risky green jobs scheme."

Allison's role as a large Obama donor "raises serious questions about an administration that puts campaign cash before taxpayer money," said Joe Pounder, a spokesman for the Republican National Committee.

Allison declined to say whether he will keep donating to Obama. "Next time around," he said, "I might support a Republican."

Hippo stuck in SAfrica swimming pool

(AP) ? A hefty hippo chased away from his herd at a South African game reserve has found a refreshing place to relax: the lodge's swimming pool. Now it's stuck there.

The young hippopotamus plopped into the pool on Tuesday at the Monate Conservation Lodge north of Johannesburg. The pool is big enough for the hippo to swim but it's eight feet deep with no steps and "there's no way he can come out," lodge manager Ruby Ferreira told The Associated Press on Thursday.

A game capture team will sedate the hippo and lift it out of the pool with a crane, said MuIsabel Wentzel of South Africa's National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Much of the water has already been drained to make the extraction easier. A veterinarian will be present during operation hippo extraction on Friday.

Wentzel said the 4-year-old hippo's mother gave birth recently, and more dominant males forced him from the herd.

The staff has been feeding the hippo. Ferreira said it's been noticeably relaxed with no other hippos fighting it for dominance, though the water in the pool has been getting mucky with hippo poop. The pool will be entirely drained before the hippo is lifted out.

Because the hippo was chased away by his herd, it will be moved to another animal sanctuary, Ferreira said.

Antique Marble Top Dresser

We have pretty much emptied out my Father-in-law?s condo and are ready for the closing next week. My husband and his siblings have managed to find homes for just about everything. Walking through the now-empty condo is a bit unsettling. All his worldly possessions, and also those of his two wives, are now gone. Gone to family or friends, but still gone. One of the pieces we inherited is this antique marble top dresser.

I don?t know much about it. ?In their big home that we sold several years ago, it sat in an upstairs hallway and held linens. In the condo it resided in a guest room.

Just when I thought I had my living room situated, this dresser was delivered and everything was moved around. The sofa went back on the window wall to make room for the dresser.

The hardware is intriguing. Each drawer has a lock with the key still inserted. All four original keys are there?and all the locks work.

It is need of some tender loving care. Some of the nails are missing from the handles.

It?s a bit scratched up and some pieces of the molding have come off. I have them though, so all I need to do is glue them back on.

I gathered up some small pitchers and a tray for on top of the marble. I didn?t realize until I had them all together that there were this many. I have to admit that just looking at it makes me happy.

I ordered some Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint from Robyn Story Designs. My friend (and I sponsor her blog) Kim, at Savvy Southern Style?just posted about the milk paint today. Robyn Story is her stockist. I, of course, ordered Mustard Seed Yellow. Honestly, I am scared to death to tackle this project. Shaking in my boots as a matter of fact!

The paint will ship by the end of the month so when I?ve attempted this transformation I?ll be back to tell you all about it. That is if I?m still standing.

We also got this little round table. I think it?s adorable. What do you think?should I paint this too?

(AP) ? Open-water swimmer Diana Nyad pushed through dark waters early Monday as she tried to complete a record 103-mile (166-kilometer), unassisted swim without the aid of a shark cage.

Her team had been trying to find a path through a storm that was nearly stationary over the 62-year-old Los Angeles woman. But they said Nyad was safe and feeling strong as she swims.

Her team was hoping she could capitalize on a great day of swimming Sunday.

"Today was an awesome day," Mark Sollinger, her operations chief, said in blog posting Sunday night.

Sollinger said the crew accompanying her in watercraft played her music by the Black Eyed Peas.

Nyad has already edured jellyfish stings on the current attempt. Stings forced her to cut short her second of two attempts last year as toxins built up in her system.

Nyad, who turns 63 Wednesday, is making her third attempt since last summer at a cage-less crossing of the Straits of Florida. She also made a failed try with a cage in 1978.

Australian Susie Maroney successfully swam the Straits in 1997, but she used a used a cage. This June another Australian, Penny Palfrey, made it 79 miles toward Florida without a cage before strong currents forced her to abandon the attempt.

A kayak-borne apparatus shadowing Nyad helps keep sharks at bay by generating a faint electric field that is not noticeable to humans. A team of handlers is always on alert to dive in and distract any sharks that make it through.

Nyad has been training for three years and is in peak shape, according to friend and trainer Bonnie Stoll.

The team expects Nyad will take at least 60 hours to complete the swim, meaning she would arrive in the Florida Keys sometime Tuesday. She was more than 34 hours into the swim early Monday.

She takes periodic short breaks to rest, hydrate and eat high-energy foods like peanut butter.

Places For Getting Cheap Old Cars For Sale | Automotive

A low budget is an effective enough reason to look for cheap old cars available for purchase. When we talk about older motor vehicles, we are not talking about vintage ones unless you intend to collect them. Perhaps models of it?s possible five years back should still glimpse good, as well as not have a whole lot maintenance to do on them still. Another reason is that a lot of people will need to run after the later models, so we have a pretty big chance that you might get the older models at a a lot much cheaper price.

You have a solution to buy from dealers, auction web-sites, or directly from owners. The latter are the best option so you would learn how the vehicle was treated before. Deals through banks, other financial institutions, or government auctions would probably really do the safest and cheapest way to uncover old cars that are put available for sale. In fact, a lot of dealers acquire their vehicles from these auctions to try and do a little resale of their unique. On the side of these companies, they are just happy to recoup their lost revenue that has a little margin on top. After many, this is not their primary small business.

EAST CHINA SEA (Reuters) - Several Japanese nationalists landed on Sunday on a rocky island in the East China Sea at the heart of a territorial row with Beijing, sparking protests in several Chinese cities and a diplomatic rebuke from Beijing.

Tokyo and Beijing have been feuding for decades over the island chain, known as the Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China, near potentially huge maritime gas fields.

Tensions flared last week after seven of a group of 14 Chinese activists slipped past Japan's Coast Guard to land on one of the uninhabited isles and raise a Chinese flag.

Japan, keen to avoid a rerun of a nasty feud that chilled economic and diplomatic ties in 2010, deported the activists within days, but the dispute lingers because of China's bitter memories of Tokyo's past military occupation.

Early on Sunday, 10 members of a group of more than 100 Japanese nationalists who sailed to the island chain swam ashore to one of the islets and waved Japanese flags.

Three Japanese Coast Guard vessels were nearby, a Reuters TV journalist on board one of the boats said.

"I was hoping that someone with a real sense of Japanese spirit and courage would go and land and raise the flag, I just feel they've done a good job," said Kazuko Uematsu, local lawmaker from Shizuoka Prefecture who was part of the flotilla.

The activists later swam back to their boats and were being questioned by Japanese Customs officials.

"The illegal behavior of Japanese right-wingers has violated China's territorial sovereignty," China's foreign ministry said in a statement.

"An official from the foreign ministry has solemnly expressed to the Japanese ambassador in China (our) strong protest, and urge the Japanese side to stop behaviors that hurt China's territorial sovereignty."

On Sunday, more than 100 protesters gathered near the Japanese consulate in southern Guangzhou, waving Chinese flags and banners urging the Japanese to leave the islands, Xinhua news agency reported.

Protesters also gathered in the cities of Shenzhen, Qingdao and Harbin, the news agency said.

In contrast, Japanese news agency Kyodo said protesters numbered in the thousands in the cities of Shenzhen and Hangzhou and that some people damaged Japanese cars and Japanese restaurants nearby.

"DON'T MESS AROUND"

Japan's government had denied the group permission to land on the islands, which it leases from private Japanese citizens.

"This is a way of saying to not mess around," Toshio Tamogami, a leader of the Japanese group, said before the flotilla set sail on Saturday.

The flotilla includes several members of parliament and local lawmakers.

"We hope to convey ... both to China and the Japanese people that the Senkaku are our territory," Tamogami said.

The renewed maritime tension with China has parallels with Beijing's other recent tangles with Southeast Asian countries over rival territorial claims in the South China Sea.

China's expanding naval reach has fed worries that it could brandish its military might to get its way.

The Sino-Japanese row has intensified in recent months since the nationalist governor of Tokyo proposed that the Tokyo Metropolitan Government buy the isles, prompting the central government to make its own bid to purchase them instead.

Japan's ties with South Korea, where resentment over its 1910-1945 colonization still remains, have also frayed since South Korean President Lee Myung-bak visited an uninhabited island claimed by both countries.

About 30 South Koreans held a ceremony on Sunday to unveil a monument on one of the barely inhabited islands, which are known as Dokdo in South Korea and as Takeshima in Japan.

The 1.2-metre tall monument is engraved with the Korean word for "Dokdo" on the front and "Republic of Korea" in Lee's handwriting on the back.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, his ratings in tatters ahead of an election that may come soon, faces domestic pressure to take tough stances with Japan's neighbors over the island disputes.

This is despite deep economic links and efforts by Seoul and Tokyo, both close U.S. allies, to forge closer security ties.

The Russian outfit were in the market for a new coach following the departure of Sergei Silkin earlier this month, and they have now found their man in the form of Petrescu.

The 44-year-old resigned from his post at Kuban Krasnodar on Tuesday, and has not wasted any time to find himself a new challenge.

Petrescu started his coaching career with Rapid Bucharest and was also in charge of Wisla Krakow and Unirea Urziceni before taking the reins at Kuban in December 2009.

Dinamo currently sit last in the Russian league table with four losses from as many games.

New Book is Using the Pain out of Obtaining Social Security Disability

That treasure of a book, lately published, is exclusive in that guide applicants are helped by it through the process of sifting through the amazingly bureaucratic Social Security System using an established system. Nothing like it?s actually been created before! Developed with the handicapped at heart, it includes actual live examples that will guide applicants step-by-step toward the completion of their application, and with the objective to get disability benefits on their first try. With more than 60% of applicants for Social Security Disability Benefits being refused every year, this Practical Guide to Social Security Disability Benefits is regular indeed.A Practical Guide to Social Security Disability Benefits, published by a young girl who experienced the entire process herself when she became seriously ill and had to use for Social Security Disability Benefits, obviously collections all the traps of the application process. That is her first book and she?s created it from her house since she has not fully recovered from her condition. She wrote it because she knew the frustrations and time-consuming tons of paperwork that a disabled person must undergo to be able to gain disability benefits. When Michelle Toole first became ill with a limiting condition of unknown causes, she thought her entire world had arrive at an end, yet it took a little while before she actually recognized that she had become disabled. ?Disability? is just a hard word to own. Among the hardest things she had to accomplish was to accept that she was certainly impaired and that she can no more work.To have to quit work that she liked was not easy. Once she came to the final outcome that she required financial help, it was around her supporters, her parents, to help her through the endless bureaucratic approach. She just did not have the power and the mental ability to sort through all the paperwork and cope with the machine. The support was actually taken by it of her advocates and of her entire immediate family for her to survive actually, psychologically and financially. At that she, point and her support system were all blind to the system. They didn?t know where to turn for help, how to file for Social Security Disability Benefits, how to successfully answer the questions on the application, or what information to deliver to the caseworker controlling the case. But, little by little, detail by detail, her advocates persevered and managed to go through the entire process and get disability benefits on her part in under six months after she applied!Knowing how difficult it?d be for a disabled individual to sort through the process, especially when they don?t have advocates who will help with the work, she chose to discuss her knowledge. By writing her book, A Practical Guide to Social Security Disability Benefits she knew that she?d have the ability to help numerous others win Social Security Disability Benefits.Written within an an easy task to read design, this book is designed to help people record all facets of their infection, such as for example physical and emotional exercise stage, recent medicines, evidence of the problem, and assistance letters from medical practioners, friends, family relations and co-workers. This type of instructions in the book help the applicant answer the application issues in a regular and distinct way, how to communicate properly with the caseworkers, and how to provide complete encouraging data to confirm their claim.Throughout the book, Michelle stresses the very fact that the Social Security caseworkers are there to help the applicant and that it is up to every individual to solicit their help. At the same time, she points out that ?with Social Security, you?re guilty of NOT having a disability and it?s YOUR TASK to demonstrate that you do!?With this guide, applicants will cut through the bureaucracy; they?ll not have to be concerned about how to fill out their application, how to cope with their caseworker, what information to include with the application, and, most significantly, which information to compile and forward to Social Security in advance to expedite the process.Michelle Toole?s Practical Guide to Social Security Disability Benefits is definitely an tool to all applicants inside their journey with Social Security. What financial reports reveal about TV networks

Companies with television networks have been releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. It generally covers the April-June period, though some companies have fiscal quarters that depart from that.

Here's a look at reports for selected television network companies:

? July 31: Discovery Communications Inc., owner of pay TV channels including Discovery, TLC and Animal Planet, says second-quarter net income rose 15 percent on rising ad sales, subscription fees and subscribers. Audiences increased and costs declined at the company's joint venture, the Oprah Winfrey Network. The company says the struggling channel remains on track to be profitable in the second half of next year.

? Aug. 1: Time Warner Inc. says revenue at its television networks grew 4 percent to $3.6 billion, in part from higher rates paid by cable and satellite TV companies to carry CNN, TBS and other channels. Time Warner also saw growth in HBO subscribers and benefited from higher ad rates and an increase in the number of NBA games shown on its channels. But ad revenue fell at its domestic news networks.

Comcast Corp. says profits fell at the cable networks, which include Bravo, MSNBC and CNBC, as expenses to produce and acquire programs grew. The company says NBC is doing better than expected with the London Olympics and no longer believes it will take a big loss.

? Aug. 2: CBS Corp. says net income rose 8 percent, beating analysts' expectations, even as advertising revenue fell and it took in less money from the sale of program reruns.

Scripps Networks Interactive Inc., the operator of pay TV networks such as Food Network and HGTV, says net income grew 84 percent thanks to higher revenue from advertising and distributor fees.

? Aug. 3: Viacom Inc. says revenue fell 5 percent at its TV networks as U.S. advertising fell 7 percent. Viacom has been struggling with a ratings decline for key channels, particularly Nickelodeon. It says it's investing aggressively to create new hits. TV accounts for two-thirds of Viacom's overall revenue and nearly all of the profits. Viacom also owns MTV and Comedy Central.

? Aug. 7: The Walt Disney Co. says revenue from TV businesses such as ESPN and ABC rose 3 percent to $5.08 billion. Ad revenue at ESPN rose in the "mid-teen" percentages thanks to higher prices, sales volume and bigger audiences.

? Aug. 8: News Corp. says revenue from its cable TV networks rose 15 percent to $2.48 billion, while broadcast TV revenue fell 3 percent to $1.08 billion in the latest quarter.

? Aug. 9: AMC Networks Inc. says second-quarter earnings rose 53 percent, largely in line with analysts' estimates, but it predicts a big drag in the third quarter if its dispute with satellite TV company Dish Network Corp. continues to leave its channels off the service. The company said that 13 percent of its subscriber base was affected by the blackout on Dish, which has continued since July 1.

EA Joins Video Game Buyout Rumor Mill - 24/7 Wall St.

Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) has joined the wave of video game companies that may be up for sale. The great rumor mill of Wall St. (and Cyber Street) now has EA as the next possible buyout target. Rumors are showing that it is quietly exploring a sale with private equity firms. The good news is that shares are up more than 10% around $14.60 after closing at $13.09 yesterday. The bad news is that value here is a fraction of its peak.

Before you go load the boat, there are some serious considerations. Activision Blizzard Inc. (NASDAQ: ATVI) has been looking to split out its Activision unit, and the maker of the World of Warcraft?s plan has reportedly not gone well. Another issue is GameStop Corp. (NYSE: GME), which always comes up as a private equity buyout candidate. Barron?s recently talked it up, but this has been a rumored buyout candidate for months and months now.

THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI) is also down and out enough that it has come up as a buyout candidate, and Take-Two Interactive Software Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO) fought off a real buyout offer years ago and has never really taken back off on the upside.

The social gaming has space and the freemium games have been putting pressure on the entire video game sector. Zynga Inc. (NASDAQ: ZNGA) has led that charge, but now the market has cannibalized the value of Zynga too. Virtual farm animals only go so far it seems.

What may be the big driver for the video game sector is a coming refresh cycle for the video game consoles. Maybe the lower-tech games for smartphones and tablets will peter out if the $59.95 shooter games get more and more lifelike in the next console cycle.

Just be sure to remember one thing more. If the private equity firms are going to take the entire video game sector private, eventually they will want to relaunch these companies in the public markets via IPOs. Maybe these just need good old-fashioned turnarounds that can work.

Best Business Consulting Strategies Revealed ? Tips And Tricks ...

Are you an experienced business consultant? If you are, you probably don?t know everything. Consulting and marketing your business implies a lifelong journey of learning and discovery. In this type of business, you have to deal with people. And people will always make things exciting to some degree. If you really want to succeed in this business, complacency needs to be removed, and your awareness needs to be stepped up. It is human nature to become lazy, to rest more than work. You will know which path to take, the one that will serve you in the best way. Even though you have read about http://www.spillovercommissions.org and some tips and ideas, there is a ton more information that is relevant and valuable.

You can see that a cursory understanding of SEO, for example, will not necessarily allow you to be successful with it; there is much more required than superficial knowledge. Deciding to pursue serious growth may lead you to enter into different areas of advertising, and that can really boost your marketing numbers. One thing we want to mention is to avoid rushing into anything that is foreign to you and your business. So what you want to do is simply place one or two ads and see what the numbers tell you.

You will have to remember that your business must be guarded, and you are the only person who will do that in any serious manner. As you progress along your way with business on the net, that one thing will prove its value many times over if you use it.

The goal, at least in theory, is to excel with your business consulting using relationship marketing in a strategic way. It?s all about your relationship with your clients, showing them that you care and that you are sincerely there in their best interests. There are lots of ways they will be able to detect that in you. Competency in your work and your business is something they will look for everyday. As long as your clients stand out due to your work, this is something they will definitely notice. That should never be in some artificial sense as that will only insult them. They will have a great time and experience with you as long as you show a zealous nature to help them with their needs.

The need for clients is one of the things that makes a consulting business tough at first. You will find yourself taking on clients that you would otherwise not want to help simply because you need the initial business. Having self-respect, and making wise choices, is simply a balance you need to find. Instead of just agreeing to work with them, you need to talk with them, and see what their goals are. This is simply temporary, not a long lasting business relationship whatsoever. Once you start a business relationship, it will only last if common ground is sustained in a positive way. Remember, if they are not a good fit for you, then that also means you?re not the best fit for them.

Be very careful how you process any perceived requirements or needs for the client. There are two, and sometimes more, brains involved in the project you are helping the client get through. You might think the client wants one thing, but that is totally wrong. You could actually recommend something for the client that is not needed, which could cause problems later on. To get around this, put yourself in your client?s shoes and adopt the other person?s perspective. Always talk about what you feel strongly about with your client directly. Just mention your thoughts, and then listen for the response that comes back and proceed from that point.

In conclusion, you need to provide exceptional services. This is how you will get clientele. Your clients will appreciate you if you pay attention to the little details, and reward you with additional business. Most clients will share with you the facts about they believe you care about their business if this is what you project. If you think about it, when you are a client for someone else, you also want to think the other person cares.
