BERLIN (AP) -UEFA has come under fire in Germany for allowing prerecorded scenes to be cut into live coverage of games from the European Championships.
Images of a German fan crying after Mario Balotelli's second goal in Thursday's 2-1 defeat to Italy were in fact taken before the semifinal, when she was overcome with emotion during the anthems.
The issue came to light when the woman received e-mails from friends at home wondering why she was so upset with almost an hour still to play.
"We are surprised and irritated," Joerg Schoenenborn, the Euro 2012 chief editor of German broadcaster ARD, told Saturday's Sueddeutschen Zeitung newspaper. "These pictures aren't acceptable for us, especially since we spoke to UEFA about this problem a few days ago. We're now looking for further talks."
UEFA told The Associated Press that it was striving to show "the human story of the game" in its television coverage, and had "no aim whatsoever to exercise any form of control over the images delivered to broadcasters."
European football's ruling body said footage of tears trickling down the fan's cheek was shown "to translate the emotion and the tension of the German fans for this game" but "our production did not agree with the editorial choice to put this at this exact place after the goal".
UEFA also said it had issued instructions "not to use these reactions again directly in a chain of replays of a live action, to avoid any misleading understanding."
ARD had first sought UEFA's clarification after Germany coach Joachim Loew was shown playfully knocking a ball from a ball boy's arm during the country's group game against Netherlands, despite the incident happening before the game took place.
UEFA said that footage was shown "to illustrate, in conformity with our editorial concept, the mood and ambiance of the event. The image was positive and in order not to mislead the audience, the director used replay wipes before and after, showing clearly that this event was not live."
Schoenenborn felt otherwise at the time, when he said: "Any form of censorship or manipulation is not acceptable for us. That's why we clearly told UEFA that the German public expects coverage to be live when it says it's live. Live is live and has to stay live."
UEFA said its "director guidelines" had been made available to all broadcasters.
But ZDF, which broadcast the Germany vs. Netherlands game, said it was unaware pre-match footage was being shown as part of the live match package. The channel's chief of sports, Dieter Gruschwitz, described it as "completely unusual."
"That does not correspond to our journalistic standards," ZDF editor-in-chief Peter Frey said.
"All these production techniques ... are fairly standard and well known by broadcasters," UEFA said.
Sueddeutschen Zeitung reported that UEFA maintains a policy of censorship in its TV coverage, avoiding any images of political banners, empty seats, pyrotechnics or streakers on the pitch.
"UEFA is committed to deliver an unbiased and complete coverage," the football body said.

JERUSALEM, June 29 (Reuters) - A beauty contest for Holocaust survivors stirred deep emotions in Israel on Friday, with organisers hailing it an affirmation of life and detractors calling it a macabre spectacle.
Fourteen women who survived the Nazi genocide took the pageant stage before a packed hall in the city of Haifa. Each of the contestants shared a bit of their personal stories before the capacity crowd.
The event touched a raw nerve with some Israelis who saw it as cheapening the memory of the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust during World War Two.
Others said it was a self-image boost for aging survivors, some of whom have fallen into poverty.
Shimon Sabag, director of Helping Hand, a private group that aids thousands of the estimated 200,000 Holocaust survivors living in Israel, said the contest held on Thursday had been so successful he may hold a similar event next year.
"There were 1,000 survivors there who enjoyed the event," Sabag told Reuters. "People don't have to see Holocaust survivors mainly as a group of wheelchair-bound victims."
Former Israeli lawmaker Colette Avital, who heads a survivors' organisation, was quoted by local media as denouncing the competition as "macabre".
The contest winner, silver-haired Romanian-born Hava Hershkovitz, 79, regaled with a blue and white sash as a tiara was placed on her head. She said the victory was "her revenge, showing how despite the horrors her family went through, her beauty and personality have endured," according to Shabag.
"We should never forgive and forget what they went through, but I find this a very constructive way to show these people remain beautiful," he added.
Hershkovitz, one of hundreds of survivors in an assisted living facility sponsored by Sabag's group, won a family weekend at a resort and all 100 contestants were issued with electronic distress buttons.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Graeme McDowell and Jim Furyk, a pair of U.S. Open champions, managed to beat par at The Olympic Club.
Tiger Woods simply got battered.
In the 33 times he has started a round atop the leaderboard at a major, Woods never had a tougher struggle with par than Saturday at the U.S. Open ? a 5-over 75 that made his uphill climb to the majestic clubhouse overlooking San Francisco feel a lot longer.
Thanks to late birdies by McDowell and Furyk, it won't get any easier Sunday.
McDowell showed the kind of fight that won him a U.S. Open two years ago down the coast at Pebble Beach. He scratched out pars and finished with a 4-foot birdie putt that gave him a 2-under 68 and a share of the lead going into the final round at The Olympic Club.
"Probably for the first time this week, I actually enjoyed the round of golf," McDowell said.
Furyk, also bidding for another trophy from golf's toughest test, outclassed Woods in the final pairing with key bunker saves and an 8-foot birdie putt on the 17th for a 70, making him the only player who has yet to have a round over par.
They were at 1-under 139, the only survivors against par.
"Obviously, I like being up front in the position I'm in," Furyk said. "The golf course will take its effect on a bunch of people. And the guys that go out there and deal with the conditions and the situations the best ... those are the guys that are have some success and have an opportunity to win the last few holes."
Woods sure didn't look like one of those guys in the third round. Wearing a key lime shirt, he turned in a lemon.
He fell out of the lead with two bogeys in the first three holes, couldn't make a birdie on the stretch of holes that Olympic allows players to make up ground, and ended with a sloppy bogey on the 18th for a 75. Only eight players had a higher score.
It matched Woods' worst score when he at least a share of the lead after any round of a major, a 3-over 75 in the final round of the 2009 PGA Championship when he lost to Y.E. Yang.
"I'm just going to have to shoot a good round tomorrow, and post early and see what happens," Woods said.
All was not lost for Woods, not to mention another dozen or so players. In a U.S. Open that has lived up to its reputation, it was difficult for anyone to get too far ahead.
McDowell and Furyk were two shots ahead of Fredrik Jacobson, who had a 68. Another shot behind was a group that included Lee Westwood, whose Saturday-best 67 gave him another shot at his first major; and Ernie Els, who holed a long pitch for eagle on the 17th that carried him to a 68. The Big Easy is a two-time U.S. Open champion, with that first title coming 18 years ago.
"Experience helps around here," Els said. "For some reason, I'm patient again this week and that's been kind of my virtue in major championship golf, the ability to be patient and wait it out. And I think you're going to have to do that tomorrow."
Thirteen players were separated by four shots going into Sunday, a list that includes 17-year-old Beau Hossler, who followed bogeys with birdies for a 70.
Woods, who has never won a major from behind, was five shots back. His round ended with a shot from the middle of the 18th fairway that hung up in the right collar of rough, and a stubbed chip that took a hard turn to the left some 10 feet away.
When he two-putted for his sixth bogey, his day got a little worse. Climbing the hill toward the fabled clubhouse at Olympic, a photographer brushed past him and Woods banged his hand into the camera. He shook it several times, but later said he was fine.
The real hurt came from Olympic.
"It was just a tough day on the greens, and most of the day, I just kept getting that half-number, right in between clubs all day," said Woods, who was either well long or short on his approach shots.
Furyk, the only player who has not had a round over par in this championship, and McDowell played together in the opening two rounds. Both are similar players who appear to be a good fit for Olympic ? control off the tee and a strong fight to avoid bogeys. McDowell referred to Furyk as a "plodder," which at the U.S. Open is a high compliment.
"It doesn't have to look or be fancy. It has to work," Furyk said. "And I think we have styles of games where we put the ball into play, we put the ball on the green and take our chance at the putt and then move on."
But this was not shaping up as a two-man race for McDowell and Furyk.
"Looking at the leaderboard, you've got to look down as far as the guys at 3 or 4 (over) as having a realistic chance of winning this tournament," McDowell said.
That includes some regular characters, such as Westwood and Els and even two-time U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen, who was five shots behind. And it features newcomers to this stage like Nicolas Colsaerts, the big hitter from Belgium ? and even a high school kid.
For every bogey Hossler made, he answered with a birdie on the next hole.
His only big blunder came on the 11th, when he was too aggressive with a downhill putt and missed his par putt from 6 feet. Two holes later, he hit a heavy chip from the hazard that rolled back down a slope for another bogey. The kid just wouldn't go away, though, and suddenly he is dreaming big.
Hossler wanted to make the cut. Then, he wanted to be the low amateur. Now?
"My goal now is to win the tournament," he said.
In the 14 majors he has won, Woods was never worse than par in the pivotal third round and had a scoring average of 68.3. There was no way that was going to hold up on a course like Olympic, though Woods was expecting better than what he delivered on this Saturday.
He missed the first fairway, came up short of the third green and wound up with three bogeys through six holes.
"I don't think he looked that far off," Furyk said. "It's just stuff happens at U.S. Opens sometimes.
Woods wasn't alone in making mistakes. David Toms, tied for the second-round lead with Furyk and Woods at 1 under, played that rugged six-hole stretch in 5 over and fell six shots behind with a 76.
Even with the USGA watering the course Friday night and Saturday morning, Olympic was as relentless as ever.
But it wasn't impossible.
Westwood showed that, as did Els, who called it as easy as the course played all week.
Kevin Chappell, who tied for third last year on a soft Congressional course that yielded a record score, had a 68 and takes an unthinkable streak of 24 holes without a bogey into the final round. He was at 3-over 213, along with Webb Simpson, who also had a 68.
Asked if the experience at Congressional would help, Chappell gave an apt description of what awaits Sunday.
"Last year we were trying to make birdies in the U.S. Open," he said. "And here, you're just trying to survive."
Westwood came in right behind Chappell, and while he failed to take advantage on the par 5s, he finished in style with a 40-foot birdie putt on the 18th for a 67. Westwood began this week as the third wheel in a powerful threesome of the top players in the world ranking. Luke Donald, the world No. 1, and defending champion Rory McIlroy have gone home. Westwood now has another chance to pick up his first major.
He twice has missed a playoff by one shot, in the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines and the 2009 British Open at Turnberry. He twice as been runner-up in the majors.
A win on Sunday would end that heartache, and return him to No. 1 in the world.
"I think I've probably been in contention in major championships more than anybody else over the last three or four years," Westwood said. "So I'm looking forward to tomorrow and hopefully go out and have some fun and see what happens."

Broad consensus around human-induced global challenges means little unless science takes more active role in sustainability debates
Rio de Janeiro (16 June 2012)Ensuring a sustainable future in the face of inter-connected, human-induced challenges facing the Earth system urgently requires new knowledge and a new relationship between science and society, according to leading scientists gathered in Rio de Janeiro for the Forum on Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development.
"Scientific evidence shows convincingly that our way of development is undermining the resilience of our planet," said Yuan Tseh Lee, President of the International Council for Science (ICSU). "We must find a different path towards a safe and prosperous future. With all the knowledge and creativity we have, it is absolutely possible. But we are running out of time. We need real leadership, practical solutions, and concrete action to set our world on a sustainable path."
The interconnected challenges facing the Earth system, which are on the negotiating table in Rio, were hotly debated at the Forum. Five hundred scientists from over seventy-five countries debated themes varying from 'Human wellbeing and population trends' to 'Food, water and energy security', and from 'Urban environment and wellbeing' to 'Indigenous knowledge'. The objective of the Forum was to present the latest scientific evidence around global environmental change and identify ways to strengthen the contribution of science to policy decisions that ensure a more equitable and sustainable future.
There was broad agreement amongst participants that we are living in a time of unprecedented global environmental, social, financial, geo-political, and technological challenges. As a result, there is renewed pressure for science to be more relevant and effective at informing policy and implementation.
There is an opportunity for a new contract between science and society to inform policy related to sustainable development and build societal resilience to environmental risks, said participants. Scientists need to engage directly with society to ensure shared understanding of the new realities shaping our world, and help translate knowledge into action for sustainable development. A two-way dialogue between science and society is needed, to ensure research priorities are informed by societal needs.
This will require nothing short of a new paradigm in the way that science engages with society.
The Forum, co-organized by ICSU with several partners, is the final stage in an almost two-year process that brought together scientific evidence to inform negotiations at next week's United Nations Sustainable Development conference popularly known as Rio+20.
The Forum looked at the greatest challenges facing our planet's carrying capacity: how to secure food and water supplies for the global population, how to provide energy in a green economy, how to adapt to a world of greater risk from climate change and disaster, how to ensure urban wellbeing and sustainable livelihoods which are more equitable and how to rethink social and economic models.
Responding to these challenges, a new, 10-year global sustainability research initiative was launched at the Forum. 'Future Earth', scientifically sponsored by an alliance of international partners from global science, research funding and UN bodies, will provide a cutting-edge platform to coordinate scientific research which is designed and produced in partnership with governments, business and, more broadly, society.
This interdisciplinary initiative is jointly established and scientifically sponsored by an alliance that includes the International Council for Science (ICSU), the International Social Science Council (ISSC), the Belmont Forum, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations University (UNU), and strongly supported by the World Meterological Organization WMO).
"The scientific evidence for action is clear and stark. Our only options are to mitigate, adapt and thrive," said Lee. "New knowledge from science must play a critical role in finding solutions through integrated research, holistic systems-oriented thinking, and a stronger commitment on behalf of science to communication, education and engagement. Initiatives like Future Earth are a critical step in the right direction," said Lee.

Crews search for four Japanese climbers on Alaska's Mount McKinley on Saturday.

Crews?have suspended efforts to recover the bodies of four Japanese climbers killed in an avalanche on Alaska's Mount McKinley, the National Park Service said Sunday.
A two-day ground search of the debris path from the avalanche turned up clues Saturday indicating the likely location of four deceased climbers, a Denali National Park spokeswoman said.
A mountaineering ranger lowered himself into the same crevasse that the party's one survivor fell into. The ranger probed through avalanche debris 100 feet beneath the glacier's surface and found a broken rope that matched that of the Japanese team. He began to dig further, but encountered heavily compacted ice and snow debris.

"Due to the danger of ice fall within the crevasse, it was decided to permanently suspend the recovery efforts," the park service said in a?press release.??
Rangers also now say that the avalanche, which happened at approximately 11,800 feet on the West Buttress, occurred early Wednesday morning, not Thursday. The lone survivor, 69-year-old Hitoshi Ogi, reached a base camp to report the avalanche Thursday afternoon. He suffered only a minor hand injury.
The climbers were part of a five-member Miyagi Workers Alpine Federation expedition. All were from the Miyagi Prefecture in Japan, the park service said.
Those killed were identified as Yoshiaki Kato, 64; Masako Suda, 50; Michiko Suzuki, 56; and Tamao Suzuki, 63.

The climbers -- three men and two women -- were descending and roped together at the time of the accident. Ogi was the last person on the rope, and thus was the closest to the surface when the team fell into the crevasse, said park spokeswoman Maureen McLaughlin.
Mount McKinley, also referred to as Denali, is the tallest peak in North America, with a summit elevation of 20,320 feet. The McKinley climbing season runs from late April until early July. Typically, 1,200 to 1,300 people attempt the peak each season.
There have six climbing fatalities on McKinley this season, according to the park service. Since 1932, a total of 120 climbers have perished on the mountain, 12 due to avalanches. This week's four avalanche fatalities were the first to occur on the popular West Buttress route.
