U.S. plane stuck in Iran for repairs after emergency landing

DUBAI (Reuters) - A small U.S. commercial plane has been stuck in Iran for nearly three weeks after making an emergency landing near the city of Ahvaz, the country's airports director said on Sunday.

The plane was forced to land because of technical problems, Mahmoud Rasoulinejad said, quoted by the Mehr news agency.

"After landing, the crew traveled on to countries around the Persian Gulf and the plane is currently being repaired," he said.

Rasoulinejad did not specify who owned the aircraft, where it was headed or the nationality of the crew members. It would soon be ready to return to the skies, he said.

Ahvaz lies near Iran's border with Iraq in the southwest of Iran, an important area for the country's oil industry.

Earlier this month Iran trumpeted the capture of a compact U.S. intelligence ScanEagle drone in its airspace, which U.S. officials have denied.

In December 2011 Iranian forces announced they had captured a U.S. RQ-170 reconnaissance drone in eastern Iran which had been reported lost by U.S. forces in neighboring Afghanistan.

Carlesimo has Prokhorov's trust and a win in debut

NEW YORK (AP) ? Skiing in Canada is postponed. Mikhail Prokhorov's new agenda calls for lunch with his basketball coach.

Prokhorov can always reschedule his vacation. Fixing his team couldn't wait.

So the Brooklyn Nets owner fired Avery Johnson, made P.J. Carlesimo the team's interim coach, and put aside pleasure for business.

Prokhorov flew to New York and watched the Nets hand the Charlotte Bobcats their 17th straight loss, 97-81 on Friday. He and Carlesimo will meet Saturday for lunch, where the Russian billionaire will likely remind Carlesimo of his high ? perhaps unrealistic ? goals for the Nets.

Carlesimo, uncomfortable with how he got the job, isn't worried about what it will take to keep it.

"Honestly, am I anxious to hear what he's got to say? Of course I do. But we've just got to go out and do the best job we can and see whatever happens," Carlesimo said. "I certainly don't want to lobby for it or anything like that."

He won't need to if the Nets keep performing like they did Friday.

The Nets played as they did last month, when they were 11-4 and Johnson was Eastern Conference coach of the month. They are just 4-10 in December, a slump that cost Johnson his job, but got back over .500 against the hapless Bobcats.

Brook Lopez had 26 points and 11 rebounds, Deron Williams added 17 of his 19 points in the first half, and Joe Johnson had 16 for the Nets, who led by 29 points and won for just the second time in seven games.

"I felt we're a good team all year and we just hit a rough patch," said Williams, who struggled under Johnson. "We've got to fight our way out of it, so we made a step in the right direction tonight and we just keep going."

Prokhorov cut short heli-skiing in British Columbia to travel to New York. He said he decided to fire Johnson last week but will be patient with Carlesimo. Even with big names such as Phil Jackson potentially available and Prokhorov vowing to spend whatever it takes to build a championship team, he said repeatedly that Carlesimo was the head coach.

Prokhorov did say that if the Nets do look for a new coach, he would be personally involved. He wouldn't discuss anyone by name, even joking he had never heard of Jackson, the 11-time champion coach whom ESPN.com reported was the Nets' top target.

"Now P.J. is the head coach and if it becomes necessary, you know who the usual suspects are," Prokhorov told reporters at halftime.

The Nets had been blown out of their previous two games and Prokhorov said the Nets were lacking team spirit.

Still, deciding Johnson would be fired last week means Prokhorov had made up his mind even before the lackluster Christmas performance at home against Boston that preceded a rout Wednesday in Milwaukee.

"I think we have very talented players, but they are capable of much more than what we have seen in the recent weeks," Prokhorov said. "I respect Avery and really I wish him well, but sometimes chemistry just isn't right. It happens.

"I think the main question is why we were unable to bounce back and to play like champions," he added.

Prokhorov added around $300 million in payroll this summer and has set the expectations high, saying he believes the Nets can reach the Eastern Conference finals. Though it's believed he wouldn't back away from paying top dollar for a coach, he left open the possibility that he may already have the guy he wants.

"P.J. is the head coach and just I think we have a lot of trust in him and really I want him to lead the team," Prokhorov said.

The Nets played with energy under Carlesimo after forward Gerald Wallace had criticized the team following Wednesday's 108-93 loss in Milwaukee in Johnson's last game.

"To me, it's kind of frustrating and sad because that's the first time in my career that a coach's been let go in the middle of the season like that," Wallace said. "But I understand the business part of it. We move on and obviously regardless of who's sitting at the head of the chair, we know what we got to do as players."

Carlesimo, who had stints coaching Portland and Golden State, is perhaps best known for his infamous run-in with Latrell Sprewell when he was leading the Warriors. A terse exchange at a December 1997 practice resulted in Sprewell choking Carlesimo. It took several players and team officials to break up the attack, which an angry Sprewell renewed 15 minutes later.

Carlesimo last coached his own team when he was fired by the Oklahoma City Thunder after a 1-12 start to the 2008-09 season and said before the game he was a little more apprehensive than normal for his return to running his own club.

"Your head's spinning a little bit, you're trying to think of all the things that were second nature," Carlesimo said. "Hopefully, I haven't forgotten. I'm old, but hopefully I haven't forgotten."

It was quickly obvious he had nothing to worry about.

The Bobcats missed 13 of their first 16 shots, making it easy for the Nets. Brooklyn scored nine straight in the middle of the first quarter to open a 12-point lead, extended it to 18 later in the period, and were ahead 33-15 headed to the second.

"It's tough. We can't put ourselves in that kind of position," Bobcats guard Kemba Walker said. "We don't have a lot of depth on our team to come back against great teams, but we do every once in a while, but we can't do that all the time. We dig ourselves in holes we can't get out of."

Williams, who missed Wednesday's game with a bruised right wrist and came into the game shooting under 40 percent for the season, was 7 of 14 from the field. Williams, who said recently that he preferred his old offense in Utah to Johnson's, acknowledged his confidence was down as he struggled to play the style that best suited the Nets.

"We came out with a lot more energy," Williams said. "I think we had to. I think our backs are against the wall right now."

Lopez, the starting center whose seven-game absence with a foot injury started the Nets' downward spiral, was 9 of 12 and made all eight free throws. He said it's easy for the Nets to offer Carlesimo the support Prokhorov wants.

"He helped us focus tonight," Lopez said. "He was there for us and you know we support him and he supports us."

Family holidays where the heart is | Otago Daily Times Online News ...

Bannockburn, an area steeped in golden history, has a special appeal that sees generation after generation of the same families escaping Dunedin and Invercargill to holiday at the local domain. Sarah Marquet went to meet some of those people to find out what brings them back each year.

About 5km to the southwest of Cromwell, over a bridge which crosses the Kawarau River there is a sign: Welcome to Bannockburn Heart of the Desert.

Looking at the hill behind the sign it really does look like a desert, the scorched grass an almost grey shade of brown and the once fragrant wild thyme burnt to a crisp, both crunching underfoot.

Turn the other way, though, and the view is in almost complete contrast - the Kawarau River winds its way over the landscape under an endless blue sky. Lush green grass, trees and bright orange Californian poppies line the banks. Further up, grape vines in neat rows grow protected from the birds by white netting. While the welcome sign, hung between two relocated bridge pillars from the old suspension bridge, advertises Bannockburn as ''the heart of the desert'', locals advertise it as ''the heart of wine country''.

Two of those locals, Jane Scott and husband Scottie, run the Central Otago District Council-owned Bannockburn Domain camping ground.

She says because Bannockburn is a land of contrast, there is something for everyone to do - from water sports to wine tastings, from walking and biking to exploring the region's gold history - and that is probably why people come back to the camping ground year after year.

Sharon Monson, of Dunedin, has been holidaying at the domain for about 20 years. This year, about 15 of her family members, spanning four generations, and five dogs, will holiday with her.

Her first camping visit to the area was instigated by her co-workers, who had friends in the area, and she has been coming back ever since.

''I just love it. The atmosphere is great ... the weather has improved over the years ... and we have space.

''We go jet-boating, go for walks in the sluicings, shopping and this year we are going to go gold panning.''

About 3km from the camping ground is the Bannockburn Inlet, a quiet area of Lake Dunstan with many secluded picnic spots shaded by trees.

Once known as the Bannockburn Creek, it was mined for coal to supply the gold dredges working on the Kawarau and Clutha Rivers in the late 19th century.

Spending time at the inlet is one of the Monson family's favourite things to do in Bannockburn.

They have a boat, a water trampoline and an inflatable kayak.

James Monson, Mrs Monson's grandson, loves swimming at the inlet and says he has a lot of friends in the area, both holiday-makers and locals.

He said he would continue the family tradition of camping at Bannockburn when he grew up and had his own family.

''He just hates going home when the holiday is over,'' Mrs Monson said.

Queenstown, Wanaka, Cromwell and Alexandra are all within about half an hour's drive, events there such as races, rodeo, and boxing day sales provide extra entertainment.

''The kids always get money for Christmas, so we go shopping, too.''

Joy Woods, another repeat holiday-maker, camps on what Mrs Scott called ''Millionaires Mile''.

Her caravan is kitted out with all the mod cons, including a full-size fridge and she has a garden.

She leaves her Bluff home for Bannockburn every Labour Weekend and stays until the end of the grape harvest, working at the local vineyards.

There are 12 vineyards in the Bannockburn area that are open to the public for tastings. Like many wineries in Central Otago, they specialise in pinot noir.

Most of the holiday-makers at the domain had been coming for ''years and years'', mostly from Dunedin and Invercargill, Mrs Scott said.

Come Boxing Day the camping ground was fully booked and often people were turned away.

''Sometimes, there is only just room for a few tents.''

There were about 60 sites, with and without power, in the ''family-oriented, animal friendly'' camp, she said.

There were also 14 permanent residents and some seasonal workers.

''But there's always room for the kids to run around.''

Bannockburn
? About 5km out of Cromwell and about half an hour's drive from Alexandra, Queenstown and Wanaka.
? In the township: hotel, cafe, store, bowling green, tennis courts.
? Town established about 1860, during the gold rush - the alluvial gold field was mined extensively in the 1860s.
? Remnants of the gold rush can still be seen, most obviously the sluicings off Felton Rd. A walk around the sluicings will take you to Stewart Town, where stone buildings remain.
? In the township, some gold rush era buildings remain, including the Post Office and the general store.
? The area is now focused on viticulture and boasts 12 wineries open to the public.
? Beyond Bannockburn is the Nevis Valley, also an area rich in gold rush history. The road to the valley crosses Duffers Saddle, the highest public road in New Zealand, and carries on through to Garston.

Childhood Obesity Fight Posts Modest Success | Your Health Journal

From Your Health Journal?..?For my regular visitors, you know I love articles on the Mass Live site, and I always recommend your visiting their web page for some great article to read, including the one being reviewed here today (link below). Over the last couple days, you have seen posts here regarding the good news that childhood obesity has actually improved ? indicating that the epidemic is slowing among 2- to 4-year-olds from poor families. A new national study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ? based on data from 30 states and the District of Columbia ? found that the obesity rate among these high-risk children declined to 14.9 percent in 2010 from 15.2 percent in 2003. As this is great news, it does not mean the fight is over, as there are other demographics still showing steep rises in overweight and obese children. So, as we should celebrate a little, we should not put down our guards. Many children are showing risk factors for heart disease and diabetes, and we still need to realize an issue is still lurking and needs attention. So, let?s celebrate this new finding, but keep working hard to continue this trend into the new year. Please visit the Mass Live site to read the complete article.?

From the article?..

It looks like 2013 might shape up to be a significant year in the fight against childhood obesity.

Indeed, there?s cause for celebration in the ongoing battle against childhood obesity with this week?s release of a new study indicating that the epidemic is slowing among 2- to 4-year-olds from poor families.

A new national study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ? based on data from 30 states and the District of Columbia ? found that the obesity rate among these high-risk children declined to 14.9 percent in 2010 from 15.2 percent in 2003.

While the drop in obesity rates among the 27 million children who are part of the federal Women, Infants and Children program was modest, researchers say any improvement is meaningful because this population is disproportionately at risk.

For example, 20 percent of poor children are obese, compared with about 12 percent from more affluent families, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Heidi M. Blanck, one of the study?s authors, said the change in direction is a healthy sign. ?We were going up before. And this data shows we?re going down. For us, that?s pretty exciting.?

U.S.-China Relations Will Define Global Politics in ... - Yahoo! Finance

The relationship between the world?s great economic powers ? the U.S., Europe and China ? will be in transition in 2013, and changing political leadership is a big reason why, says Daniel Franklin, editor of The Economist magazine?s ?The World in 2013."

The relationship between China's new leader Xi Jinping and President Barack Obama ?is absolutely the crucial one now for global politics,? Franklin tells The Daily Ticker.

Related: U.S. Refuses to Label China a 'Currency Manipulator' but All Countries Manipulate Their Currencies

Franklin says both men need to keep U.S.-China trade flowing. China is the second largest trading partner of the U.S. Last year $503 billion worth of goods were exchanged between the two countries. 80% of those items were U.S. imports from China.

Franklin says both countries also need to work on resolving disputes between China and other countries over ownership of islands in the South China Sea. Many of those countries, including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and the Philippines, are allies of the U.S.

?This is something that has to be handled, adjusted to, and it will be awkward, no doubt about it," says Franklin.

The European Union is the largest trading partner of the U.S. and is another region in political transition. Germany, Europe?s largest economy, will be holding an election for chancellor next year. Franklin expects Angela Merkel, head of the Christian Democratic Union, to be re-elected but says she will likely head a ?grand coalition? with the opposition Social Democrats.

In Italy, Mario Monti, who?s worked closely with Merkel, has announced he?ll be stepping down after a little over a year in office. Monti is credited with adopting economic reforms that brought the EU?s fourth largest economy back from the brink. But Monti says he?s lost the support he needs to govern.

France, the second biggest economy in the EU, faces the challenge of reviving an economy that's been running big deficits for years. President Francois Hollande "has big problems?in getting the country?s finances on a very sound footings,? says Franklin.

Beyond China and Europe, the Mideast poses another challenge for the global economy, says Franklin. ?I?m afraid the outlook for Syria does not look good for the year ahead,? says Franklin.

Related: For Markets, Mideast is a Much Bigger Worry Than Europe: Jim Rickards

Adding to the uncertainty is the situation with Iran?whether Israel will attack and whether Iran will develop nuclear weapons. The preference is for ?sanctions on Iran to bite hard enough that there?s a change of course,? says Franklin. But if that doesn?t happen and there?s a military confrontation, the price of oil will soar -- affecting every nation in the world, Franklin warns.

Divorce-Proof Marriage: 10 Reasons I'm Sure We'll ... - Huffington Post

By Amber Doty for YourTango.com

By now, you've probably heard the widely-touted statistic that the divorce rate in the U.S. is 50 percent. According to the Pew Research Center, though, the rate of divorce is on the decline (along with the rate of marriage). This success is likely due, in large part, to the fact that people are waiting longer than ever to walk down the aisle.

While I agree that stability is certainly important, I don't buy into the idea that age is a deciding factor in whether a marriage ends in divorce. It's not the case at all with my marriage.

My husband and I met and began dating when I was a teenager and were married in our early twenties. More than eight years later, I am as confident as I was on our wedding day that our marriage will last a lifetime. In fact, I would go so far to say our union is divorce-proof. Here are 10 reasons why.

1. We wanted a marriage, not a wedding. Recently, I had coffee with a friend going through a divorce after only two years of marriage. When I asked what happened, she replied without pause, "I wanted a wedding, not a marriage." She went on to explain that, after years of dating, getting married seemed like the next logical step in their relationship and the timing was right for them to fund the wedding of her dreams. From seating arrangements to color schemes and everything in between, there are many decisions to be made while planning a walk down the aisle. It can be easy to lose sight of the ultimate goal: to begin a lifelong relationship with the person you love. But the hard part isn't in saying "I do," it's in choosing to say it again and again for the rest of your life. For my husband and me, the focus was always on the morning after (and every other morning after that) instead of the "big day."

2. We didn't wait until after the wedding to tackle important issues. It can be awkward when you're dating to discuss things like the number and timing of children, personal approaches to finances, where you see yourself living down the road, or what religion your family will practice, but knowing the answers to these questions before you marry can mean the difference between a rocky start and a smooth transition into your new lives together. Everyone has their dealbreakers, but identifying ours before we gathered 100 of our closest friends and family members to pledge our lives together for all eternity cut down on surprises after they had all gone home. I am always shocked by the number of marriages that end in divorce because a couple never bothered to discuss their ideas for the future.

3. We put each other and our marriage first. Our children come second. I?ve written about it before here on YourTango. I love my children, but I am in love with my husband and prioritizing our relationship is good for our family as a whole.

4. When it comes to our relationship, our in-laws are outlawed. Mother-in-laws are at the center of many a sitcom and romantic comedy shenanigan -- and for good reason. They're notorious for causing marital strife both on-screen and off. That's why my husband and I have made it clear that while I can't control his mother's opinion on my cooking and he will never escape my mom's incessant nagging on the upkeep of our yard, their thoughts on our relationship are unwelcome. When we need advice or just to vent, we seek out the listening ear of a friend, not a family member.

5. Our bedroom is a child-free zone. Nothing kills the mood faster than reaching under the sheets mid-romp to dislodge an uncomfortable object that turns out to be a half-empty sippy cup.

6. We use our past to our advantage, not our detriment. My husband and I both come from divorced families, a fact that many studies agree puts couples at greater risk for divorce themselves. But history doesn't have to repeat itself. We talk openly, both together and with therapists, about what went wrong in our parents' marriages and how it affected our lives and our perception of matrimony.

7. We maintain common interests. One of the very first conversations my husband and I shared was a discussion of a book we had both recently read. It's dorky, but we're suckers for a good horror novel. While the differences in our personalities and our day-to-day are vast (he works long hours in law enforcement; I work from home as a freelance writer), we share reading material and talk about it regularly. A book club for two may not be the foundation on which our marriage is built, but it is a reminder of why we got together in the first place beyond the roles we have assumed since our relationship began.

8. We practice emotional self-regulation. In an article highlighting the skills every person should master before getting married, YourTango expert, Dr. Susan Heitler, emphasizes the importance of learning to control your emotions. You can remove nails driven into a board, but you can't undo the holes they create. The same is true for words said in the heat of the moment. Taking time to cool down instead of entering into a shouting match has been the difference between a marital spat and a major blow-up.

9. We give each other space. When I step out for a much needed day away from the house, I am confident my phone will not ring unless there is an emergency. Likewise, when he arrives home from work, I give him time to relax before handing off the childcare responsibilities. A little independence and time to ourselves is as vital to the health of our marriage as fostering a common bond.

10. We split the parenting duties equally. Nothing breeds resentment faster in a marriage than feeling like you are solely responsible for the diaper changing and late-night feedings. Since the day our first child was born my husband and I have adopted a 50/50 approach to parenting. "You get this one. I got the last one," is a frequently uttered phrase in our home. We also share the burden that being a parent can place on a career. There is no expectation that, as the woman, I will shoulder the responsibility of taking a day off when our children are ill. Nothing makes me feel more supported and secure in our relationship than knowing my husband and I are partners in parenthood.

Are you confident your marriage is divorce-proof? How do you maintain a healthy relationship with your spouse?

Barca coach Vilanova suffers cancer relapse: report

Barca coach Vilanova suffers cancer relapse: report

RCD Mallorca v FC Barcelona - La Liga

Head coach Tito Vilanova of FC Barcelona looks on prior to the La Liga match between RCD Mallorca and FC Barcelona at Iberostar Stadium on November 11, 2012 in Mallorca, Spain
Image by: David Ramos / Getty Images

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has suffered a relapse on the cancer in his saliva glands, Spanish daily El Pais reported on Wednesday citing sources at the club.

The 44-year-old Vilanova, who underwent surgery on a tumour in his glands in November last year, stepped up from his role as assistant to replace Pep Guardiola as first-team coach for this season.

The La Liga leaders put out a statement cancelling a Christmas event planned with local media and president Sandro Rosell in the morning, saying the reasons would be given later.

?Very sorry to hear the news,? Barca midfielder Xavi said on his official Twitter account, as messages of support flooded in.

Former tennis world number one Rafa Nadal said: ?All my strength and support for Tito Vilanova! We are all with you to overcome this next hurdle.?

Vilanova was out of action for around three weeks after surgery last year, but returned to the dugout to help Guardiola for the last six months of the 2011-12 campaign.

The quietly-spoken Catalan said the experience had left him with a different perspective on life, at his presentation in June.

?I had an important operation a few months ago,? he said. ?I spoke with the medics and my family about the job, but they all said I was perfectly okay and there was no problem.

?Having overcome this operation it gives me a different view on life. Perhaps, after what has happened, training Barca will be like kids play.?

Vilanova has guided the team to the top of La Liga with 15 wins in 16 games, nine points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid, and into the last 16 of the Champions League as group winners.

Barca have one game left, away at Valladolid in La Liga on Saturday, before the two-week winter break.

US Pentecostal churches blamed for homophobia ?surge? in Africa

Extreme elements of the US Pentecostal Church are behind the ?surge? in homophobia across Africa, according to human rights groups.

Speaking to Metro, Renato Sabbadini, the secretary general of the International Lesbian and Gay Association, said: ?What we?re seeing is that this surge of homophobia is being encouraged by an active influence of foreign sources and I?m mainly referring to Pentecostal churches in the US.

He added: ?These evangelists are finding that homophobia is a sort of visiting card which will aid in getting more people to convert to their own version of Christianity.?

In 2009, American evangelist Scott Lively met with Ugandan public figures to teach against what he described as ?the gay agenda?.

While in the capital, Kampala, he wrote a report for a website linked to his ministry which stated: ?The international ?gay? movement has devoted a lot of resources to transforming the moral culture from a marriage-based one to one that embraces sexual anarchy.?

Emily Gray from Amnesty International said: ?We have noticed that the religious right-wing, particularly from America, has had a big impact on the levels of homophobia and incidences of intimation and violence.?

Last weekend, Uganda?s Parliament adjourned for the year without voting on the proposed Anti-Homosexuality Bill.

First issued in 2009, the legislation widely became known as the ?kill the gays? bill, referring to one of the clauses proposing death for offences such as ?aggravated homosexuality?.

Earlier this week, Uganda?s President Yoweri?Museveni said gay people should not be killed or persecuted, but warned that homosexuality should also not be promoted.

Although most African nations seem to be going backwards on LGBT equality, Kenya has been cited by Amnesty International as making significant progress.

South Africa remains the only country on the continent to have legalised equal?marriage.

Scrapbooking Christmas - Cut At Home

We are down to the home stretch, so most of us have gifts bought and wrapped, cards sent and homes decorated to the hilt, but have you thought ahead to scrapbooking Christmas? I only ask, because in my world, having my memories of family and friends saved forever in photos is so important, especially since the older I get, the more things I?m forgetting!

Scrapbooking is a wonderful way to not only to document important events, but reliving those times in my mind as I create, then reminiscing again in the coming years as our family gathers around the completed photo albums.

If you are new to scrapbooking or don?t have a lot of time, it is best to keep it simple to start. You can always add embellishments later, but at least get those photos organized! I suggest the following:

1. Start with the basics- paper, scissors, adhesive, sheet protectors, album and a decent paper trimmer. Keep it simple!

2. Make sure you get names, dates and possibly place on your photos a.s.a.p. after developing before you forget! Most cameras have the capability of recording the date now, so I like to have a back up CD as well just in case with that information stored on it.

3. Organize you photos -I put mine in order of date in photo organizer boxes, but at least get them organized by month or year. This will help you know where to find certain events quickly.

4. Get started! Group photos either according to event, person, place-however works best for you, but start putting them together on pages and remember to jot down any journaling that tells about the photos. Just because you know all about them doesn?t mean someone else will down the road.? Don?t worry about what other people may think or about being to frilly! Everybody has had to start somewhere, so just ENJOY THE PROCESS! You will get more crafty as you get the hang of it.

5. You may want to create a ?craft budget? to start collecting a few supplies. There are a whole slew of? stickers, stamps, dies, die cutting machines, markers, etc. on the market and it can get overwhelming, so think about what you would actually use and start out a little at a time. Remember, those of us who have been doing this for a long time have been collecting for a long time as well! I started with paper and stickers. As you get into this hobby, your supplies will evolve according to your style, which you will find along the way!

After 20 years, I have gone from a box of supplies to a whole room! My daughter?s mother-in-law saw my craft room and said it was embarrassing how much stuff I had, but I don?t think she realized how long it took me to collect, and she didn?t realize at that time how much I love to create and use what I have!

6. Learn to play again! Have fun, and enjoy the process of starting a creative hobby! This is the #1 important part of scrapbooking! Besides, isn?t scrapbooking all about the photos and not the page anyway? Embellishments are just a bonus.

For those of you who have already dove head first into scrapbooking, but are looking for fresh supplies, check out our Christmas Theme section HERE. There are pages and pages of awesome products that will help you add that special touch to your layouts from paper and dies to inks and stamps, Spellbinders and Sizzix to Tim Holtz and Hero Arts!

Better start by making sure you have fresh batteries in your camera!

Thanks and Happy Scrappin?!

Time a four-letter word. Looks so simple. Sounds so simple. Yet, how many Excuses do you make to spend quality time with your child?

I did not spend a lot of physical time with my father growing up. By the time I was eighteen he died during my midterms in my first semester of college. There was no opportunity to say, ?goodbye?.

The last time I spoke with him I was at school begging the Administration to use their phone to call New York. I was in California and had no money to use the payphone to call the hospital long distance. ?My father is dying in New York?. I pleaded crying, ?Let me use the phone?.

That would be my last conversation with him standing in front of a group of strangers while I listened to my father crying begging ?God? to release him from his pain. It was as if lightening struck me. My father had always been an Atheist; unusual at the time for a Black man but conformity was not his nature.

As a young girl my father, Stacy Seppinni made sure that every visit with me was focused on me. I quite often sat on his lap until he would request for me to show him my latest dance moves. I played with his glasses, watch and hands. He allowed me to be close to him. He made sure that my time with him was spent without the interruption of my three older brothers. Our time was quality time.

While in prison (from the time I was two until just before my seventh birthday) he wrote me letters, called, wrote me a poem for each one of my Birthdays and sent gifts other prisoners made just for me? a portrait of me, hand carved jewelry boxes with my name and leather goods were just a few of the items.

We spent our time fishing on Sunday?s when I was 7-8 years old. He?d make me Cream of Wheat (my favorite at the time) or Oatmeal at 4 AM in morning. This was the time he used to sit and read the paper and talk to me about the happenings at my school. On weekends when he was home we went to the Metropolitan Museum in New York. We?d stop in front of his favorite paintings discussing the artist. He enjoyed taking me to the park. He?d sit and read the paper while watching me play. I especially enjoyed when he took me to Central Park to see Patty the Monkey.

He loved to read so I was lucky to be around all of his books, which I kept for years because they were apart of him. Most of all he held my hand wherever we went and took great pride in having a little girl. I loved the way he smelled so any chance of cuddling next to him when lied down (when sober) was heaven as he put his arm around me as he watched T.V. Often he would fall asleep during the program gently I would open his eyes and announce ?Poppy your a sleep!?. ?No, Baby? he would say, ?I?m just resting my eyes?.

When my mother moved my brothers and I to California my father decided to stay in New York. I spent years not living with my father but, to me he was there everyday. It was because we spoke almost every day on the phone. Throughout my life he took every collect call from me especially when I cried because I missed him or simply needed to tell someone how I really felt about my world?other kids, the move to California, my interests and so forth.

My father was a terrible man domestic violence, murder, gambling, drug addiction, extreme violent episodes with my brothers and so on?

Now as an adult I realize he gave me one of the greatest gifts a child can receive he created quality of time with me. He was fully engaged in creating a parent ? child intimacy and trust between us. He took the time to share the best part of him. He did this throughout his years of absence through his endless conversations with me ending all with ?I love you with all my heart?. Our quality of time became part of the foundation of how I love and chose to be loved.

If we can all learn in times of tragedy as in the loss of twenty children in Sandy, Connecticut it is not only to remember to hug your child but, to spend quality time, listen well and express your love. Guilt and regret are harder to live with than the process of grief and loss. Guilt and regret lead to a lifetime of self-hatred, feelings of failure and a refusal to forgive oneself.

It?s been many years since my father past and yet, I think of him daily. I still speak to him daily in my mind. He visits me in my dreams when I accomplish something I?m truly passionate about letting me know he is still with me and therefore I am never alone. My father continues to live on in my heart.

As I tell him all the time ?Dad, Pop please behave yourself in hell, stop womanizing, put down the bottle, and be nice to others. You need to behave so that you can meet me in heaven when it?s my time go?.

Resolving Globally Active, Systematically Important, Financial ...

G-SIFI.? You?d be forgiven for mistaking this latest acronym for a new jeans brand in SoHo or an American hip hop group.? In a joint paper published recently, the Bank of England (BoE) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) released its long awaited: ?Resolving Globally Active, Systematically Important, Financial Institutions,? aiming to kick start the creation of an orderly resolution process for globally active, systemically important, financial institutions.? These G-SIFIs, as they are known, may never be as popular as G-Star Raw or G-Unit.? However, if the BoE and FDIC?s plan works, they probably should be.

The G-SIFI list is currently set and maintained by the Financial Stability Board, a body made up of regulators, central bankers and international bodies, with the G-SIFI list being updated every November.? The current list is below in case you want to take a look, or you can click here.

The joint paper outlines a resolution strategy for failed or failing G-SIFIs using a ?single point of entry? and ?top down? approach.? This resolution strategy aims to maintain systemically important operations and contain threats to financial stability.? Having witnessed the loss of vast quantities of taxpayer funds worldwide during the recent financial crisis, losses are assigned under the joint paper to shareholders and unsecured creditors in the financial group, thereby avoiding the need for a bailout by taxpayers.? Another objective of the resolution process is to give market participants greater predictability about how financial regulators may approach a resolution in practice, so that the anticipated resolution process can be accurately priced into securities.

The resolution process concept outlined in the joint paper is simple: a distressed G-SIFI would see its existing management replaced by its primary regulator, followed by a debt-for-equity exchange in which bondholders would replace existing shareholders, who would be wiped out.? Once restructured, the surviving G-SIFI would be returned to private hands.

The joint paper itself is high level.? It details a ?top-down? resolution strategy for the U.S. and UK that involves a single resolution authority applying its powers at the parent company level of a financial group (depending on where it is headquartered) and discusses how such a top-down strategy could be implemented for a U.S. or UK financial group in a cross-border context.? The strategy for both regulators is based on recent financial legislation, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 (Dodd-Frank Act) in the U.S. and the Banking Act of 2009 in the UK.? A top-down resolution approach aims to establish new capital structures at the top of the group and determine losses accordingly in a G-SIFI financial restructuring scenario.? It also maintains the corporate structure of a G-SIFI intact, which can run to hundreds or thousands of legal entities.? The key advantage of the top-down, single point of entry approach, the joint paper argues, is that it avoids the need to commence separate territorial and entity-focused insolvency proceedings, which based on past experience are disruptive, time-consuming and expensive.

The joint paper anticipates a single point of entry resolution strategy.? In the U.S., the FDIC will be appointed receiver of the top-tier parent holding company of the financial group under the orderly liquidation authority (OLA) provisions of Title II of the Dodd-Frank Act following the company?s failure.? Immediately after the parent holding company is placed in to receivership, the OLA will transfer assets from the receivership estate to a bridge financial holding company (while leaving behind substantial unsecured liabilities and stockholder equity in the receivership), with the idea that this would immediately result in a well-capitalized holding company.? Much in the way that CIT continued operating once its parent entity was filed for chapter 11 (and you can read more about this here), subsidiaries of the parent entity in receivership can remain open and operating under this structure, limiting the need for destabilizing insolvency proceedings at the subsidiary level.? Once the G-SIFI has been stabilized by the OLA, the surviving operations can be transferred to private hands, with existing stockholder equity being wiped out.? The joint paper anticipates the OLA looking to subordinated debt holders or even senior unsecured debt claims as the immediate source of capital, while original debt holders would expect to see their claims written down to reflect any losses in the receivership not covered by existing equity holders, and these debt holders would also see their claims left in the receivership.? Finally, the remaining claims of debt holders would be converted, in part, into equity securities or convertible subordinated debt that will serve to capitalize the new operations.? If you want to read more about the rules issued by the FDIC implementing certain key sections of the Dodd Frank Act, click here, or review all of our Dodd Frank related posts by clicking here.

The UK?s approach involves the same top-down resolution process for its single point of entry resolution strategy.? The plan would be to transfer equity and debt securities from shareholders and debt holders to an appointed trustee.? The trustee would then hold the securities during a valuation period in which the losses of the G-SIFI are established, and the amount of recapitalization determined.? A bail-in announcement would then be made to the previous security holders that would include the details of the full write down or conversion.? Completion of the exchange would see the trustee transfer the equity and written down debt securities back to the original creditors of the G-SIFI, once the organization had been restored to a position whereby it is solvent and viable.? The trust would then be dissolved, leaving the recapitalized G-SIFI owned by the appropriate layer of original creditors.? It all sounds simple, in theory.

So what are the initial reviews?? The Financial Times? Lex column thinks a formalized bondholder bail-in plan will raise the cost of debt for G-SIFIs and that funds that cannot hold equity would avoid buying G-SIFI debt on the basis that, if the institution were in need of resolution, such funds would not be able to hold the resulting equity.? It is worth noting that the joint paper does anticipate this problem and provides that creditors unable to hold equity securities would be able to request that the trustee in the UK sell the equity securities on their behalf.? The Financial Times? second, more fundamental criticism is that other national regulators may not follow the lead of the BoE and FDIC.? That being said, someone has to take the lead, and it may as well be the regulators with the dubious distinction of having enjoyed the lion?s share of the world?s major financial restructurings.? The joint paper will also be a useful blueprint for other financial regulators to determine whether such a resolution process strategy is possible under their own national laws.? If it isn?t, they can plan accordingly (and set the expectation of their international counterparts), or seek to have national law amended to accommodate the strategy.? Lastly, though the Financial Times complains that this is just another piece in post-crisis financial regulation, perhaps some direction and movement is better than none.

A coordinated and consistent approach between national regulators, in particular ones as significant as the U.S. and UK regulators, is obviously encouraging.? The joint paper sets out one resolution strategy for G-SIFI?s though it notes that ?other strategies may be more appropriate depending on the structure of a group, the nature of its business, and the size and location of the group?s losses.? To paraphrase Helmuth Karl Bernhard Graf von Moltke (one of the great strategists of the 19th century), ?No plan survives first contact with the financial markets.?? On the other hand, having a plan is always a good start.

Group of global systemically important banks (G-SIBs)

In November 2011, the Financial Stability Board (FSB) published an integrated set of policy measures to address the systemic and moral hazard risks associated with systemically important financial institutions (SIFIs).? In that publication, the FSB identified an initial group of G-SIFIs, namely 29 global systemically important banks (also known as G-SIBs):

?Best Funeral Ever? TV show in the works

A casket is carried into a boxing ring on the pilot episode of "Best Funeral Ever" (EW)"Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" may be about to lose its crown as most-ridiculed show on television. That's because The Learning Channel (TLC), the same network behind Honey Boo Boo and other cultural landmarks such as "Cake Boss" and "Extreme Couponing," is launching a new show based on a funeral home.

EW reports that "Best Funeral Ever" will air on Dec. 26?as a one-time special. It will go behind the scenes of the Golden Gate Funeral Home in Dallas,?a truly, well, unique funeral home. If the show gets strong-enough ratings, it's expected to be picked up as a full-time series.

Golden Gate's funeral director, John Beckwith, helps each family plan an unconventional service followed by what he calls a "wild party."?Some funerals have included a barbecue-themed memorial?featuring a sauce fountain?and one was held inside a boxing ring.

In the past, Yahoo News has reported on extravagant funeral options, including a $35,000?gold-plated coffin. But this is the first we've heard of a funeral home creating scenarios in which the deceased can (kind of) slam dunk a basketball, which Beckwith says is another one of its potential services.

"We do not have generic funerals," Beckwith tells a family attending a memorial planning session. "Everybody's experience has to be different."

In a clip for the show, Beckwith says Golden Gate's services are based on the tradition of homegoing funerals, which have their roots in the African-American community and are constructed as a more vibrant and positive occasion than some traditional funerals.

(When the singer Whitney Houston passed away, her family sent out invitations that said the services would be done in the style of a homegoing.)

"We're going to make these families extremely happy at the worst moments of their lives," Beckwith told EW.
