Church determined to keep food pantry going

Inside a landmark church on the West Side, volunteers pass out hundreds of bags of food twice a month to the disabled, working parents and children ? all desperate to make ends meet.

It has been an outreach of El Divino Salvador United Methodist Church for 17 years, growing from five families receiving food monthly to more than 150 people.

A VIA bus stop fronting the church at Zarzamora Street and Woodlawn Avenue has made the food ministry a popular and accessible site for people across the city. They gather as early as three hours before the 9 a.m. opening, some using walkers or in wheelchairs, and others pushing strollers with infants.

?No money can replace the feeling you get or the expressions you see on those people's faces,? said pantry director Lali Saucedo. ?When you see that smile on that child's face after you give them a bag of cookies or a little treat, you can't describe it.?

The church food pantry is one of the area nonprofits showcased during the holiday season as part of the Express-News' 17th annual Grace of Giving series.

The program relies on a church building constructed in 1927 and in need of repairs.

There are cracks in the walls, asbestos in the floor tiling and mildew forming on the second-floor ceiling tiles where water is leaking through.

The food stored on the second floor was moved into the main distribution room and placed on shelving. That room now is crowded, making operational space much smaller for the 10 to 12 volunteers who support the pantry.

The church is studying how to repair the leak on a $192,000 annual budget funded primarily by aging congregants.

A decade ago, the church had about 250 regular attendees. Most Sundays now, about 100 are in the pews.

But church leaders said they're determined to keep the pantry open on the first and third Tuesday of each month, even though it has added 660 clients in the past year for a total of more than 2,600.

It receives cash donations from the church, then buys food from the San Antonio Food Bank. The pantry also gets direct food donations from church members.

Four bags went to Tom McDowall, who waited in line on a cold December morning as a first-time recipient of help. McDowell, an owner of a foundation repair company, said a stroke a year ago wiped out most of his income.

?It's humbling,? he said. ?I'm calling the groups that used to work for me so I can ask them for work.?

Giggs: Experience will help United in title push

By STEVE DOUGLAS

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:42 a.m. ET Dec. 29, 2011

LONDON (AP) -With most of its title rivals toiling over the Premier League's traditionally busy holiday period, Manchester United has found an extra gear that seems likely to take the team to the top of the standings heading into 2012.

United has wiped out the five-point lead held by Manchester City at the start of December and is seeking a sixth straight win when it hosts bottom side Blackburn on Saturday - the day manager Alex Ferguson celebrates his 70th birthday.

That would leave City in the unusual position of being behind in this season's title race when Roberto Mancini's team visits Sunderland on New Year's Day.

Even a mountainous injury list - currently featuring 11 players - hasn't yet upset United, the reigning champions seeking a 20th English championship success.

"The experience that the manager, the players and the coaching staff have of what's required in the second half of the season, as well as the overall hunger and desire to win competitions, will help us," said veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs, who recently scored for the 20th straight season in the Premier League.

"Big players can't wait for big games. Toward the end of the season the games just get bigger and bigger. For me personally, you want that in the run-in - you want to be involved in big games and going for the title. That's why you become a footballer."

City goes into the latest round of fixtures over the festive period ahead of its fierce rival on goal difference but, without an English title since 1968, it doesn't have United's experience heading into the run-in.

The leaders have dropped five points in its last four matches.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool seem to be out of the title picture, leaving Tottenham, which has won eight of its last 10 matches, looking like the only side capable of breaking the Manchester duopoly at the top of the table.

Seven points behind the pair with a game in hand, Spurs visit Swansea on Saturday where in-form Wales winger Gareth Bale will return to his native country.

"It's great to be up there but we know ultimately that we have to keep concentrating," said Bale, who scored both of Tottenham's goals in the 2-0 win over Norwich on Tuesday.

"It's not even halfway through the season, there's still a lot of games to go and nothing's achieved at this stage of the season. Hopefully we can keep the form that we're in and keep pushing ourselves up the table."

Chelsea - four points adrift in fourth after a run of three straight draws - hosts Aston Villa and fifth-place Arsenal is at home to Queens Park Rangers.

The stand-out match sees Liverpool host Newcastle on Friday, when home striker Andy Carroll looks to start repaying the faith shown in him by manager Kenny Dalglish.

Luis Suarez's one-match suspension for sticking his middle finger up at Fulham fans in a recent league match should ensure Carroll starts at Anfield against the team that sold him for 35 million pounds ($56 million) in a stunning last-minute deal in January's transfer window.

The mighty price tag - which made him one of the world's costliest ever players - appears to be weighing heavily on the England international, who has only scored twice in the league this season and has often started on the bench behind Suarez.

Brushing aside regular stories in the British press about Carroll's off-field habits - he was urged by England manager Fabio Capello in September to drink less if he is to become a regular in the national squad - Dalglish insists the player can still thrive at Liverpool.

"He is adapting well to the change and we will keep working with him and, fortunately for Andy, we have much greater belief in him than a lot of people have who write about him," Dalglish said.

"He is not struggling to deal with anything - I don't think self-belief is a problem for Andy Carroll, I don't see why it should be."

Carroll - a boyhood Newcastle fan - could be set for an extended run in Liverpool's starting lineup after Suarez was handed an eight-match ban from the Football Association last week for racially insulting Manchester United defender Patrice Evra during a match in October.

The Uruguay international is likely to appeal against the suspension but could face a lengthy spell out, giving regular opportunities to Carroll.

With Liverpool having drawn its last two games, against lowly sides Wigan and Blackburn, it needs to get back to winning ways to keep pace with its rivals for the Champions League places.

Liverpool is currently in sixth place, a point and a place above Newcastle but three off Chelsea.

"I think we deserve to be higher up the table than we are but you've got to earn that right and not talk about it," Dalglish said. "To be fair, they (the players) have done a lot of talking on the pitch for us.

"As long as we are in there somewhere, continue to do the right things and give ourselves a chance (come the end of the season) then we'll be happy with that."

Clerics clash in Church of the Nativity (Reuters)

BETHLEHEM, West Bank (Reuters) ? A Christmas cleaning of the Church of the Nativity turned into scuffles on Wednesday between rival Christian clerics zealously guarding denominational turf at the holy site.

Brooms and fists flew inside the church marking the birthplace of Jesus as some 100 priests and monks of the Greek Orthodox and Armenian Apostolic churches brawled.

Palestinian police, bending their heads to squeeze through the church's low "door of humility," rushed in with batons flailing to restore order.

"It was a trivial problem that ... occurs every year," said police Lieutenant-Colonel Khaled al-Tamimi. "Everything is all right and things have returned to normal," he said. "No one was arrested because all those involved were men of God."

Administration of the 6th century Bethlehem church, the oldest in the Holy Land, is shared by Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Armenian clerics.

Any perceived encroachment of jurisdictional boundaries within the church can set off a row, especially during the annual cleaning for Orthodox Christmas celebrations, which will be held next week.

Japan, India shares gain in holiday-thin Asia, U.S. hopes help

TOKYO | Mon Dec 26, 2011 11:46am EST

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese and Indian stocks outperformed the rest of Asia in thin trade Monday, with sentiment partly lifted by signs of U.S. economic recovery, although trading was subdued with many markets closed for Christmas holidays.

Tokyo's Nikkei stock average .N225 ended up 1 percent, above its 25-day moving average of 8,459, while India's main 30-share BSE index .BSESN rose 1.14 percent, as investors sought holiday-season bargains.

But MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan .MIAPJ0000PUS slipped from a two-week high touched earlier in the day to trade down 0.1 percent.

U.S., European and some Asian markets including Hong Kong and Singapore were closed Monday.

Wall Street stocks rose Friday, with the broad Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX breaking through its 200-day moving average after a four-day rally lifted stocks to bring the index up 0.6 percent for the year at last week's close.

The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI rose to its highest in five months Friday.

"The Nikkei is moving with New York. The gains in the U.S. and Europe gave some sense of relief to markets," said Hajime Nakajima, a wholesale trader at Cosmo Securities in Osaka, Japan.

In a sign the markets may be stabilizing for the time being, the CBOE Volatility index VIX .VIX fell to 20.73 on Friday, near a five-month low, reflecting receding investor desire for protection in stock index options against future losses.

The VIX -- a measure of expected volatility in the S&P 500 over the next 30 days -- fell to its lowest since the global financial crisis of October 2008 at 14.3 earlier this year, before picking up to a year high of 48 in August. It has been slipping since hitting a high above 30 earlier this month.

CONCERN ON CHINA EARNINGS

The Shanghai Composite Index .SSEC fell 0.5 percent on concerns over corporate earnings outlook, pushing below the psychologically important 2,200 level in light trading.

The Korea Composite Stock Price Index .KS11 slid 0.6 percent on doubts over the euro zone debt crisis getting resolved.

"Program selling was the main drag on the index today, and despite the optimistic U.S. data, foreign investors aren't ready to re-enter the market in force as long as the (European Central Bank) isn't taking more concrete measures," said Lee Kyung-soo, a market analyst at Shinyoung Securities.

Investors will be looking for clues over the strength of the U.S. economy from data due this week, including the S&P Case-Shiller house price index for October and consumer confidence for December.

U.S. consumer spending growth was tepid and a gauge of business investment fell for a second month in November, data showed Friday, but recent labor and manufacturing figures implied a more-lasting and fundamental strengthening of the recovery.

The U.S. Congress Friday approved a two-month extension of a payroll tax cut that will preserve income for most Americans, supporting their purchases of goods and services and helping sentiment.

The euro was up 0.13 percent to $1.3060, well above its 11-month trough of $1.2945 hit earlier this month.

The latest Commodity Futures Trading Commission data showed investors reduced their short euro positions slightly, potentially giving support to the single currency.

"Given a lack of factors to trade and low liquidity, activity is expected to be lackluster this week, but sluggish results of French and Italian government debt sales scheduled this week could pressure the euro amid an absence of progress in bolstering euro zone safety net," Barclays Capital said in a research note.

The 10-year Italian government debt yield stayed near 7 percent, above which many say is unsustainable for managing public finances and the economy, while 10-year Spanish government bond yield also stood at an elevated 5.40 percent.

Wariness about European banks' health and risks of another global credit crunch made banks reluctant to borrow to each other, pushing the London interbank offered rate for three-month dollars up further Friday to 0.57575 percent, its highest since early July 2009.

Tulsa Sports Bar Opens On Christmas Day For Thunder Tipoff

TULSA, Oklahoma -

Oklahoma's economy gets a big present. The curtain on the NBA season is finally lifted and the Oklahoma City Thunder take to the hardwood.

News on Six was at the Blue Rose where fans are finally saying "Thunder Up," and managers are responding with "ka-ching!"

A lot of restaurants and sports bars don't open on Christmas Day. But when the owners here at the Blue Rose found out the Thunder got a coveted Christmas Day opening game at home against the Orlando Magic, they gladly cashed in on the NBA's long-awaited tip-off.

Managers say the success and popularity of Oklahoma's college football teams kept the bar busy throughout the fall. But once the bowl games are over, the only local team left to root for is the Thunder.

If the NBA lockout wiped out the entire season, it would have been a rough winter and spring for sports bars. But now, it's shaping up to be an unforgettable season.

The sports world heavily favors the Thunder to clinch the Western Conference for a shot at the NBA finals.

Fans in the cheap seats hope that happens, too. But for now, they are just thankful to spend Christmas with the Thunder.

College seeks interest in care-worker program for on-island course plan

An international health care provider with a college in Vancouver is looking to expand its base by offering a satellite program on Salt Spring next year.

Susan Gooding, manager of program development for Drake Medox College, said the school has been offering the Health Care Assistant Diploma Program for almost eight years in Vancouver and is now hoping to reach out to other communities.?Drake Medox is interested in offering its six-month program beginning in 2012 if a minimum of 12 participants register.

?As health care providers, and advocates for quality care for our senior community, our interest extends beyond our service provision boundaries, to the general seniors? population,? Gooding explained in an email.

?We are hoping to provide satellite locations for one-time delivery of the Health Care Assistant Diploma Program to a number of areas throughout B.C. where there is a gap between the need for qualified facility and home care services and the supply of certified Health Care Assistants.?

The college has identified Salt Spring as a community with a growing seniors? population and a need for more community care workers to help keep seniors in their homes. As well, Gooding said, a change in government regulations means that all newly hired health care assistants will need to have diploma certification.

Gooding has talked to a number of local health care providers to learn what the community need might be, including Lady Minto Hospital, Greenwoods Elder Care and private home support workers. She has secured agreements from some of these groups to allow students to complete the practicum portion of the program with them.

?After talking to the employers, it doesn?t seem that 12 is too many,? she said, adding that job placement after graduation is one of the college?s primary concerns for its students.

?Greenwoods has been extremely accommodating. They probably stand to benefit the most [from the added workers] ? as well as the retirement community.?

Gooding said she has not yet been able to reach Beacon Community Services, the company contracted by the Vancouver Island Health Authority to provide community health workers to the Gulf Islands region, but in an interview with the Driftwood, Beacon?s media spokesperson Kerry Readshaw could not say whether newly graduated workers were actually likely to find jobs on Salt Spring.

?It?s certainly safe to say that it?s a training path that makes sense for people to explore,? she said.

?In a general sense people are aging and more people are requiring care.?

To make the program more accessible, Drake Medox plans to reduce its normal tuition of $7,550 to $7,000 for the six-month course. That comes in at around $500 more per month than students would find at a Vancouver Island community college, but as Gooding points out, that price doesn?t factor ferry costs and commuting time into the equation.

The course is eligible for funding through student loans and some government employment programs. Funding is also available to help existing care aide workers upgrade their certification. To make it even more accessible, Gooding suggests that local service organizations and businesses could step up to the plate and create scholarships using their own criteria, noting the program cost ?does seem to be a major barrier.?

?The businesses obviously stand to benefit,? she said, ?because the more seniors can stay on Salt Spring, the more the local economy will prosper.?

After placing ads locally, Gooding has received several course applications to date. Ideally she would like to start the program in March, but said the date is a ?moving target? depending on how many other people sign up.

Applicants will go through a screening process and should have an English 12 credit or equivalent, and need to pass a physical clearance and a criminal record check. Gooding plans to host an information session on the island in the new year.

Roku brings v3.1 software update to first-gen boxes, Amazon Instant Video channel gets refaced

Early birds may get the worms, but early adopters aren't always as equally rewarded. But, as they say, maybe first-gen Roku owners should simply be elated that their box is still on the update trail. A week (and change) after the Roku 2 and Roku LT saw a fairly significant software update, the company is now pushing v3.1 to OG models. As the company says: "Unless your Roku player is smaller than a hockey puck, this update applies to you." The fresh bytes provide added enhancements to support the official Roku iPhone app, improved playback of MP4 files streamed over the internet and over USB via the USB Media Player channel, and the ability to purchase Roku players, accessories and toys within the Roku Channel Store.

Furthermore, we're told that issues found when navigating channels that display content in a grid screen have been solved, and perhaps most importantly, there's support for Amazon's downright delightful new Instant Video channel. Every last unit should see the update pushed their way in the coming hours, but if you're not exactly the "patient" type, just head to Settings -> Playing info -> Check for update.

Obama, GOP Thank Troops

(Dow Jones) - President Barack Obama and a member of the Republican opposition on Saturday thanked US troops for their service and wished everyone a merry Christmas in their respective radio addresses.

"For many military families, the best gift this year is a simple one -- welcoming a loved one back for the holidays," President Obama said in his weekly radio address to the nation. US troops have returned from Iraq this month, ending a nearly nine-year war.

"So let's take a moment to give thanks for their service; for their families' service; for our veterans' service," the president said. First Lady Michelle Obama, who is spending the holidays in Hawaii with the president, also thanked troops for their service.

Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) spoke for the Republicans and said while many people are blessed, "too many will greet this season with heartache."

"Some of our neighbors, family and friends are struggling to make ends meet despite their best efforts, unable to find work in this difficult economy," he said.

Pence said people should thank US troops and work alongside struggling families to ensure they get the support they need during rough economic times.

"Let's also make a point to personally reach out to that neighbor or friend who needs a helping hand, a kind greeting or an invitation -- it might be just the gift someone needed most," he said.

New source of stem cell generation pioneered

A process that prompts a single gene to generate millions of supercharged stem cells, which can then turn into any kind of cell a body needs to repair itself, has been patented at the University of Central Florida.

Stem cells have long been regarded as a holy grail of sorts in the medical world, because they hold so much potential for treating and perhaps curing some of the most challenging diseases in our time, such as Alzheimer's,Parkinson's and diabetes.

But a limited supply of stem cells and ethical issues associated with cells from embryonic donors have stalled progress on many fronts. For the past decade, researchers around the world have tried to generate embryonic-like stem cells from adult donors. To achieve stem cells this way, several genes have been required. And many of those genes have been known to trigger cancer. UCF's approach, called Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell technology, minimizes the risk because only one gene (Nanog) is used in the process.

A study described in Science noted that the gene, which had not been used by others, is not linked to cancer. The study can be seen at: http://www.sciencemag.org/site/products/lst_20070420.xhtml

"This technology has the potential of literally changing the entire landscape of regenerative medicine," said Kiminobu Sugaya, the lead researcher and a professor at UCF's College of Medicine. "This technology demonstrates the ability to use a patient's own cells for treatment of a wide range of illness, injury or disease."

Sugaya has been investigating the potential use of stem cells in treating Alzheimer's disease for years. He holds dozens of patents including the one for this iPS technology, which was recently licensed to Progenicyte, an emerging biopharmaceutical company Sugaya founded in 2008. Sugaya and Progenicyte will now begin extensive collaborate efforts to advance this new technology from the lab to the treatment of patients.

With better access to stem cells, scientists may be able to open the body's healing power more quickly, giving Alzheimer, Parkinson, diabetes, cancer and heart disease patients hope that their own cells may help them get rid of these diseases, Sugaya said.

2.8 Million Jobless Americans to Lose Unemployment Insurance ...

?

by Adele Stan, Dec 22, 2011

When House Republicans left town for the holidays Wednesday, they didn?t even leave behind?a piece of coal in the stockings of some 2.8 million jobless workers whose unemployment benefits are about to expire over the course of the next two months. At least a piece of coal can be burned for heat.

An analysis by the National Employment Law Project (NELP) finds that come January, some 1.8 million will lose their unemployment insurance (UI), with another 1.1 million meeting the same fate in February.

NELP Executive Director Christine Owens explained in a statement:

Winter is upon us, a time when shelter, heat, and adequate nutrition are expensive and deeply important, and the most vulnerable among us are at even greater risk.

Further, Owens explained, the?House failure to extend UI?will be felt well beyond the ranks of the unemployed themselves:

The impact of a lapse of federal unemployment insurance will be devastating for the unemployed, their families, the communities in which they live and the local economies the benefits support.

As we reported, House GOP leaders scuttled a vote on a bill already passed by the Senate that would have extended federal unemployment benefits by an additional two months, and extended the payroll tax holiday for the same amount of time.

Owens concludes:

To rob the unemployed and their families of their essential lifeline just as the New Year begins, especially when a clear alternate path is available, is more than callous?it is unconscionable.

Watch Out: A Deluge of Legal Blogs is Approaching ? Robert ...

Better start building that ark, because a deluge of new blogs will soon flood the legal profession. At least, that seems to be the conclusion of a just-released survey of social media in the legal sector conducted by LexisNexis and Vizibility. Just take a moment to ponder this graphic, which is just a snip from a gi-normous infographic that was created to illustrate the survey results:

It asks law firms what social media services they plan to use in their marketing. Note the responses for blogging: Of AmLaw 100 firms, 93.8% have or plan to have blogs. Of AmLaw 200 firms, 94.7%. Move on down the list and the percentage for every size firm is greater than 75%. Among 1-5 lawyer firms ? which make up the majority of firms in the U.S., 87.8% have or plan to have blogs.

In short, roughly nine out of every 10 law firms will be blogging ? some might have multiple blogs. Someone on Quora estimates that there are 50,000 law firms in the U.S. That means we could soon expect to see as many as 45,000 legal blogs, maybe more.

That?s good news for Kevin O?Keefe, who is in the business of building blogs for law firms. He?s probably putting a down payment on a new boat right about now.

But what?s it mean for the rest of us ? those who already have blogs and those who regularly read blogs?

Well, on one hand, I suspect it?s much ado about nothing. Despite their best-laid plans, I doubt all the firms that say they?ll launch blogs really will. And of those that do launch blogs, no doubt a good number will be abandoned or ignored, as seems to happen with many blogs.

On the other hand, I have no doubt that many new legal blogs will continue to launch and that a fair number of them will be worth reading. The more the merrier, I say. Like cream, good blogs rise to the top. Even if we have a flood of blogs, there will be those that stand out and those that do not.

For readers of blogs, there is a coming feast of abundance. For writers of blogs, the game is on to produce quality, thoughtful posts that will keep your blog from drowning.

Yahoo expands sharing of stories through Facebook

(AP) ? Yahoo is deepening its connections with Facebook's online social network.

The latest bond announced late Tuesday will enable Facebook users to share more of their activities on Yahoo's websites, including which stories they are reading.

Yahoo Inc. introduced the Facebook-sharing option in its main new section three months ago. The same feature will now be available in 26 other parts of Yahoo's site, including its "omg" service for entertainment news and sections devoted to television, movies and games.

By tying more of its services to Facebook's popularity, Yahoo is hoping to give people more reasons to visit and stick around its website. Yahoo ultimately wants to sell more online advertising. That's an area where Facebook has been gaining ground as its website has emerged as a top Internet hangout.

As Facebook has become more influential, Yahoo has been struggling to remain relevant among Web surfers and online advertisers.

It's been a daunting challenge so far. Yahoo has gone through three different CEOs in the past four years while its revenue and stock price have drooped. The difficulties have prompted a board review that will culminate in a sale of all or part of the company.

Yahoo has been pleased with the results of Facebook-sharing so far. Traffic to Yahoo's news section from Facebook has tripled since that sharing feature was introduced, according to the company, which is based in Sunnyvale, California.

Apparently, a relatively small percentage of Yahoo's 700 million users want their online social circles to know what they're reading on the Web. Yahoo says about 12 million people have opted to share their tastes in news stories so far. The feature is particularly popular among young adults ranging from 18 to 24 years old, according to Yahoo.

Facebook sharing still isn't available on two of Yahoo's most popular sections, finance and sports. The company says those sections will be linked to Facebook early next year.

How to manually update your GSM Galaxy Nexus with the Android 4.0.2 OTA

Galaxy Nexus update

So Android 4.0.2's starting to roll out to the GSM version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. But maybe you don't want to wait? (We sure don't.) Here's how to easily flash the update to your phone, same as we did for the volume bug update. Note that this won't erase anything, and it's really no different than if you sat back and waited.

Note that this is for stock phones, and for people who want to update without really doing any real  hackery but don't mind a little command line work. Nothing we do here is permanent, other than the update itself. If you've already flashed CWM, then you probably already know what you're doing anyway. And with that ...

Thanks, Scott, for the OTA location

Man U eyes top spot

Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, left, is congratulated by teammates after scoring against Wolverhampton Wanderers during their English Premier League soccer match at Old Trafford Stadium, Manchester, England, Saturday, Dec. 10.

By STUART CONDIE

updated 2:11 p.m. ET Dec. 16, 2011

Manchester United could briefly forget about injury problems, Champions League elimination and its resurgent neighbor on Sunday.

If Manchester City loses to an Arsenal side that already won 5-3 at Chelsea this season, United could overhaul its rival and go to the top of the Premier League for the first time since Oct. 14 with victory at Queens Park Rangers.

But QPR has lost only twice at Loftus Road this season, with Chelsea, Newcastle and Aston Villa among the sides that failed to win there.

"We have a good record there and I hope we can continue that," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "They've done well and given themselves a chance of staying in the league by investing and bringing in a few players. It's going to be a hard game."

United has not lost in seven trips to QPR since May 1989, but its last visit was in March 1996, just before QPR's 15-year absence from the topflight began with a demoralizing relegation.

Ferguson will again be without captain Nemanja Vidic, striker Javier Hernandez and midfield duo Anderson and Tom Cleverly - along with ill midfielder Darren Fletcher - but has striker Dimitar Berbatov back from an ankle problem. Rafael Da Silva and Darron Gibson could also be available.

QPR manager Neil Warnock guided his newly promoted side to a 1-0 win over Chelsea in October and saw his team go ahead against Manchester City last month before losing 3-2.

"Queens Park Rangers have invested the right way," Ferguson said. "Neil Warnock realized that when you get into the Premier League you need big players. That gives them a better chance because it's an unremitting league in terms of the demands.

"Strangely, Norwich, Swansea and QPR have done well and adapted to the demands of the league. The real test, though, is in the second half of the season."

But QPR will be without key defender Anton Ferdinand because of a hamstring problem.

City hosts Arsenal on Sunday with almost as much attention focused on striker Mario Balotelli as on his team's chances of winning.

Balotelli was again pictured fighting with a teammate this week, with defender Micah Richards the latest player to square up to the temperamental Italy international.

"He said it was because he didn't pass the ball to him," City manager Roberto Mancini said. "It was a really stupid thing. It was nothing. After 10 minutes it was finished. I was always involved in problems on the training ground, with Trevor Francis and Liam Brady. It happens.

"This has happened with Mario four times now. He is the king for this. But it has happened with other players. However, Mario should pay attention, not just about this, but in every situation."

Arsenal is on a run of seven wins from eight Premier League matches and has won four of its last five away matches in all competitions. But the Gunners are still without Kieran Gibbs, Jack Wilshere, Andre Santos, Carl Jenkinson, Bacary Sagna, Lukasz Fabianski, Vito Mannone, Abou Diaby and Ryo Miyaichi.

Also Sunday, fourth-place Tottenham hosts Sunderland and Liverpool goes to Aston Villa.

On Saturday, it's: Blackburn vs. West Bromwich Albion; Everton vs. Norwich; Fulham vs. Bolton; Newcastle vs. Swansea; Wolverhampton Wanderers vs. Stoke; and Wigan vs. Chelsea.

Chelsea will have David Luiz available after the defender was suspended for Monday's win over City - the leader's first league loss this season - for picking up a fifth yellow card of the campaign.

TransCanada bets expansion plan will help Keystone (Reuters)

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) ? Buoyed by renewed pledges of customer support, TransCanada Corp said on Thursday it not only wants to proceed with its stalled Canada-to-Texas Keystone XL oil pipeline but to undertake a $600 million expansion and extension.

The company is betting its proposed expansion of the original $7 billion plan to carry Alberta oil sands crude to the Gulf Coast will hammer home Keystone's economic benefits to politicians and trump the environmental worries that have prompted a lengthy delay in its U.S. approval process.

TransCanada said shippers for Keystone XL, target of vocal protests by green groups and Hollywood celebrities for much of 2011, have backed a 19 percent increase in capacity as well as plans to build an extension to Houston-area refineries.

The move, which is subject to the delayed regulatory approval, would boost capacity for the oil sands crude to 830,000 barrels a day from 700,000.

It would also double the refining capacity on the Gulf Coast accessible by Keystone XL, the Calgary-based company said. It expanded the proposal after an "open season" in which customers made conditional shipping commitments.

The beefed-up proposal has no bearing on the U.S. State Department's deliberations on approving the project, TransCanada spokesman Terry Cunha said.

Last month, the State Department, after studying the project for more than three years, pushed off its decision well into 2013, past the U.S. presidential election next November.

"There's still a process to be followed with the Department of State and getting approval," Cunha said. "But what it does outline is we continue to get strong support from the shippers to build this project and deliver crude oil into the U.S. Gulf Coast."

The pipeline controversy is politically troublesome for President Barack Obama as it pits his supporters with strong green views against those seeking the energy security and jobs that the project's backers have touted.

Critics say Keystone XL would bring risks of oil spills to much of the central United States and foster more development of carbon-intensive tar sands production.

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives have tried to push Obama to fast-track an approval of the pipeline in exchange for supporting the extension of a payroll tax cut. Obama has said he would veto such a bill.

One reason for delaying the ruling was to study rerouting part of the line away from a massive underground water source in Nebraska, which was a big concern among lawmakers in the state. But TransCanada and the state hammered out an agreement on that just days after Washington slammed the brakes on the process.

At stake for the oil market is the promise of an end to a costly glut of oil supply at the Cushing, Oklahoma, storage hub, where surging supplies from Canada and the Bakken region of North Dakota have led to deep price discounts.

With Keystone XL delayed, other proposals have emerged to drain away supplies from Cushing, chief among them Enbridge Inc and Enterprise Products Partners' plan to reverse the flow direction of the Seaway pipeline between the Gulf Coast and Cushing with eventual throughput reaching 400,000 bpd.

TransCanada executives have discussed the possibility of moving forward with Keystone XL's Cushing-to-Gulf portion before the overall project wins a green light, but it is not known if that is possible with the State Department review going on.

"I think those discussions are still ongoing, so nothing has been confirmed at this time," Cunha said.

Under its expansion proposal, TransCanada would build a 48-mile lateral line to Houston from the pipeline's terminus at Nederland, Texas. It could be in service by 2014, pending regulatory approval.

Dana White responds to Twitter troll with prison rape joke

Remember how just last week, UFC president Dana White cut Miguel Torres for making a rape joke? And reprimanded Rashad Evans for using the Penn St. child abuse case in trash talk? White said at the time that Torres' remark about a rape van is not funny and disturbing.

Yesterday, White responded to a follower who was clearly trying to bait him by making a prison rape joke. (Click the link above for the uncensored tweet.)

Dana White responds to Twitter troll with prison rape joke

"Dicker410" is inexcusable. He said that White's death would be great, which is a hair shy of a death threat. But in responding to this troll with a joke about prison rape, White lowered himself to Dicker410's level.

Anyone with a profile in MMA has been baited by someone hoping for an explosive response. I'm a lowly writer in the sport, and it happens to me daily. You have to learn not to take the bait and give the troll the response that he or she wants. You definitely have to learn not to respond with jokes about rape.

When asked about a code of conduct for his fighters, White said that sometimes he needs a code of conduct for his actions on Twitter. It's simple, Dana. Don't respond to trolls, and hold yourself to the same standards as your athletes.
